Default PR Card

So because I didn't have a fixed address when I arrived I couldn't receive my PR card. What is the next step, as the officer gave me a form that just asks for address details but CIC website states loads about forms, photos and fees.

You can use the form within a 180 days of "landing" once you have a permanent address. If you don't, then you have to re-apply for a PR card and pay the fees and complete an application.

If the 6 months have not passed you can also update your address on line through the form on the cic website too.

It took us a couple of months after landing to buy a house. Once we did, we simply phoned the number on the form you're given upon arrival, and the cards came in the mail a few days later. Simple.

I tried to call the number on the phone but it states its not in use or something along those lines and doesn't give you another number. If I use the online system to update my address, does that automatically mean they will then process my PR card or do I need to do something else? Its only been just over 2 weeks since I landed by the way.

My wife 'landed' last June, didn't have an address and so asked to defer sending out her PR card until we emmigrated this year. They seemed to be ok about that, stamped her passport and forms but didn't say anything about 'time limits' ... The immigration office in London here said that when she/we go out in June we simply need to go down there a couple of weeks before and get a form from them for £30 or something which will re-trigger the PR card when we land again. We just assumed this was the case. Does this sound familiar? Bit worried that we might have to re-apply or pay more fees. What sort of fees are we talking about?

Thanks!

Its only about the card not re-applying for the whole thing again and I would imagine that's what the 30GBP is all about.

That would be for the "Travel Document" i think ($50CDN). If its more than 6 months from landing thern there are probably additional fees for reapplying for the card itself. Personally for a UK passport holder I think the hassle of getting the travel document far outweighs the hassle of explaining not having it upon reentering canada.

So do I only have to update my address, will this automatically mean they will issue my PR card?

The travel document is proof to the airline that you won't be turned away when you arrive in Canada (and have to be flown back to th UK at airlines expense). Immigration don't need it - they can easily check your PR status, hence why a travel document isn't required crossing at a land border in your own car.

As far as getting the travel document - it's unlikely that an airlines will deny travel for a UK passport holder with a one way ticket, and without PR card or the travel document.

I landed on 30th Jan 2010, and am now back in the UK (boo) after 2 week holiday - so did not get my PR Card. I plan to go back over in June (within the 6 months) for 6 weeks - so will have a return ticket. finally moving permanently in September.

Does this mean I won't need to get a Travel Document to return in June - i.e. it is within the 6 months, and I will have a return ticket?

Also explained the above to IMO and they were fine about staying for a holiday and returning later.

If you have a UK passport, then you should be fine without the Travel Document.

Do you have the landing record form in your passport?

The six months is just an administrative deadline to give them an address. If you wait beyond that you have to pay to get a replacement in effect.
