Just wondering myself and my wife are moving to Canada, possible Edmonton, in July on a 1 year temporary work visa. We dont have any jobs arranged as yet, but we would so love to stay in Canada over the year, does anyone know what the deal is with getting a PR.. Thanks guys

Hi and welcome to the forum.

There are two ways you can try and stay beyond the year. Firstly, you could apply via the PNP programme for the province you are going to. Most of them will need a permanent job offer and LMO (something your employer has to get to prove they have advertised the job across Canada and been unable to find a Canadian willing, or able, to do the job).

The other way is to apply as a Skilled Worker with arranged employment. For this you again need a permanent job offer, plus something called an AEO (again, your potential employer would have to get this from HRSDC), you also need experience and the job offer in a job that is Skill Level A, O or B or the NOC Matrix. And lastly, you'd need the requisite 67 points (check the self assessment test on the CIC website if you're not sure whether or not you'd get them).

Those are, briefly, the two ways to try and stay in Canada past your year. For further info on both of them, have a read of the Wiki (on blue bar at top of page) which has loads more details and will hopefully get you to the point where you understand it all!

Also, do read the Wiki article entitled 'Labour Shortages' (just put it into the search and it'll come up), it'll tell you all about how to give yourself the best chance of finding an employer willing to go through the LMO or AEO process. Make sure whichever province you do decide to head for you are giving yourself a shot.
