Default Possible relocation from Oxford to Calgary

Hi there,

My husband has been offered the opportunity to work in Calgary for 6 months. We are looking into the logistics of taking this up with our 1 year old son... all a bit daunting at the moment!

Just wondered if anyone had made a similiar temporary move and wondered if you have any advice?

Any suggestions for a good location for us to choose??

Thanks!
Jools and Mark

Hello Jools and Mark,

Read the Wiki articles on Calgary. It has links to several other sub-articles (is that a word?). The most useful one for you, at this moment, probably is Calgary Residential Areas.

Also check out the Wiki article called Renting. It has links to loads of websites on which you can find houses for rent.

Hi Jools....

I guess ultimately it just depends on how much you want the experience....

Hubby and I lived in three countries before coming to Calgary. Our last move was with our 18month old to Germany for just seven months. We had lived there before and really wanted to go back....THe company organised a lot and so it was pretty straightforward....

There are upsides and downsides to moving with children......Obviously you are not quite as free as you were...THat said I have always found that children are a great way to make friends.....Most of the people I know now are through my kiddies!!!

As far as moving to this part of the world goes well there is a lot to see and you can always view it as an extended holiday. Calgary is a pretty 'user friendly' city and generally everyone is friendly....The Rockies are amazing and BC is just wonderful....!! Frankly I would say go for it just for the experience but that is me.....

Perhaps you should investigate how much help your husband's company will give you - relocator? Paying the rent etc....YOu can get a lot of assistance though this site too....

Feel free to PM me if I can help at all
Good luck with your decision
Lisa

Thanks so much Lisa, you speak so much sense!! We have pretty much decided that we are going to 'go for it' providing we can get the company to agree to the right terms etc... fingers crossed they come up trumps.

Might get back to you a little further down the line if you don't mind?
All the best,
Jools

Hello and welcome! We're in similar circumstances to you, live in Bucks and also have a one year old son (and 3 year old daughter). Looks as if we're heading to Calgary too (although not 100% yet, hubby is still weighing up job offers and driving me insane - I just want to know where we're going and plan now!!) and we wouldn't be going forever either, probably a couple of years before coming home again.

Best of luck with it all, maybe see you out there!

Hi again, sorry not replied for such a long time, we are now a few weeks away from our move to Calgary! We still have no flights booked (argh!) as my husbands work are dealing with this but still we are looking forward to it all falling into place very soon. How are things your end? Have you got a decision as yet?

All the best to you too!

HI again...

So you decided to go for it!!! Good for you - big world and all that.
Feel free to get in touch. I have a five yr old and a two yr old. I'm guessing you won't be bringing a ton of toys for your little one so if I can help by passing on some of ours for your time in Calgary I would be happy to....

Hope all goes smoothly. If I were you I would be planning some time in BC...Will your hubby have holiday time whilst you are here?
Good luck anyway
Lisa

Yep, decision now made and we're off to Vancouver! Going out there in the New Year, the new company want hubby to do 6 months or so in their London office to get to know how the company works and are then sending him out as Country Manager for Canada to start up the office there properly (they currently only have a satellite one - whatever that means - in Vancouver). He actually starts there tomorrow so hope he likes the company or we're screwed!!

Really hope that your move to Calgary goes well and that you enjoy your time out there. Well done for deciding to go for it, I know it's not easy when you've got a young child but I think if you didn't do these things, you'd regret not taking the chance. It's just too good an opportunity to pass up.

Best of luck, keep us posted!
