Once again extremes, it's like you think extremes happen every bloody day. Take a look at the dates those extremes were set.

Can we stick to NORMALS.

By the way it hit -30°C in Calgary as an overnight low three times last winter.

Global warming has an upside.

You can stick to averages if you like if it makes you feel better, but Ill stick to the Ontario winter for the time being.

Of course if the OP had the option of a job on Ontario there might be some point to all this, but all we have done is prove you can prove what you like with the same set of stats. Hopefully you now understand at least where I am coming from with my reference to hacking the weather...my wife couldnt stand the "on again off again" nature of the winter out there, but then shes an Ontarian, so what do you expect.

If you've never experienced it don't make judgments about it. Because it's obvious you don't have a clue.

And I'd expect better of you than to use extremes as examples of everyday weather.

That's what you get on an open forum, everyone can have their say and it drifts. I doubt there is a thread on here that has stayed on topic. You can bring it back on topic by posting other questions you may have, just ignore the replies that you don't like.

Threads tend to wander off topic.

Don't feel bad this tends to happen to most threads here.

Feel free to ask any specific questions any time if someone can help they will. But expect what happened here to happen again it's just the nature of these types of forums.

It's a public forum, and thread drift happens - it's just the nature of it. You've had some good responses, and if you have still have a specific question that needs answering, then either ask again, or just post a new thread about it (preferably searching first to find any recent ones on the same subject, and also checking the Wiki to see if there is a relevant article).

:)

And tell us Steve, how many Ontario winters have you experienced for comparison?

My wife spent a winter out there, maybe it was atypical. One or two posters here have moved Ontario to Alberta or vice versa... maybe they could offer an informed opinion.

Regarding extremes I would have though a weather watcher like yourself would have realised that while the extremes themselves may be rare, they are still part of the bell curve and have some relevance to the other points on the curve? Yes, its not extreme all the time. 10% of the time perhaps its only 90% that bad, but overall it paints a picture worth looking at.

The month end snowfall on the ground is average if thats what floats your boat, it shows more snow here for a couple of months, but more months there with snow... perhaps due to chinook melting lowering the snow on the ground, not much chance of any melting here for a couple of months and that shows in the numbers.

The OP may not realise that that bit of Alberta is a little unique due to the chinooks and temperatures vary due to that, which averages out the extremes. Most of the time in Ontario the temperature will be pretty close to the average, can you say they there?

Anyway...sorry to waste more of the OPs time, but anyone considering moving to Calgary should probably want to get an idea what the weather is like rather than go by the monthly average.

I would endorse what others have said about Calgary being fairly expensive - more expensive than I expected it to be certainly so I would be careful with planning financial aspects. Would the employer contribute to your relocation expenses? It sounds like your job would be a skilled job so there would also be a spouse open work permit but that would need confirming. It is important to have healthcare coverage though work here otherwise it can get expensive.

To the OP: This thread confirms what I have always thought: the wusses head out to Ontario; those that don`t let little things like cold or a few days of discomfort spoil what is an obviously better place to live, head to the Prairies:p

I would say it is pretty static right now. No catastrophes like the UK and US and the $CDN is quite strong on other currencies, whether that's good or bad depends how it affects you.
