Default Positive experiences

Well, we've been in Ontario for just under 10 days now. We fly back to the UK on Thursday.

OH was officially "landed" as of Sunday, 7th of May. By 9:30am on Monday, he'd applied for his SIN number, and we'd done all of the "admin" type stuff that we'd planned to do (apart from apply for his ROLF refund!). We spent Monday looking at potential cars to buy when we move over in October.

On Tuesday we used a service called www.resumeadvance.ca. We submitted our resumes to a number of agencies in the GTA and Ottawa. We then went to Pearl Jam on Tuesday night (an interesting experience...non-smoking venue, but the second the band came on the pot came out. I felt HORRIBLE by the time we left).

Wednesday we drove up to Ottawa. Midway there we remembered we hadn't switched the mobile on after the concert. Switched it on, and there were 8 voicemail messages from agencies. We called them back on Thursday, and a couple of them just wanted info, one wanted to know if I would move to the US for a role, and a couple had jobs ready for us to start the following day (I'm a QA/Software Tester, OH is a System/Network Admin). Needless to say, we were happy with that. We then checked our e-mail, and each had over 25 e-mails from agencies, most being just automated responses, but some promising ones.

We drove back from Ottawa on Saturday, kicked around on Sunday, went shopping today. While we were out OH got a call about a particular position in Mississauga doing almost exactly what he's doing now, in the same industry. Apparently it's a Union gig, so the pay and benefits are good, but it's working 3pm - 11pm, and he wants to get out of the manufacturing industry and into an office, so he probably wouldn't take it. This afternoon I got two e-mails saying that two positions I applied for at RBC have got through the first stage, and have been forwarded to the recruitment manager. One of them isn't a position I applied for exactly...I applied for tester, they've put me forward for test leader, so much higher position.

Needless to say we're happier about the job situation here! We've heard all the horror stories about the IT industry, but it looks good from our point of view. Of course we haven't accepted jobs yet (we're still not moving for 4 months), but if this is an indicator...!

Congradulations on everything it sounds like everything is going in the right direction. It is very positive to hear that getting a job in IT isnt impossible. We will hopefully go out next year to look at the IT market and chat to employers. Good luck with everything else .
