I was just wondering what happens when you have points on your UK Driving license and I am exchanging it for one in Alberta (dont have to take test). I have 3 points (TS10). Went through amber to red traffic light.
Can anyone advise?

They don't transfer to your Alberta one, if that is what you are asking. They will remain on your UK one until spent.

Yes that is what I was asking. So you start with a clean one then. So when you get car insurance they dont take in to account your points then?

The points you are talking about will be from another country on another licence. The Alberta licence you will present for insurance purposes will not have any points on it, so therefore nothing to take into account.
I wouldn't even mention a UK licence, or points, at time during in the insurance application.

I'll go out on a limb here and say.....

But when they ask this question, I am sure it would mean last 3 years in Canada.

When they ask here in (UK) it's normally questions about UK driving history not other countries. I think

We're both (you and I) confused. Once you have your Alberta license, do you intend to apply for insurance through a UK company so you can drive in Canada (in which case, they will know about your demerit points), or do you intend to apply for insurance through a company in Canada (in which case, you'll want to determine what the Canadian company wants)?

They will ask you are points etc in the last years it doesn't matter its another country. Furthermore you must bring with you a no claims history letter as that will reduced you cost for insurance. ( same for property/contents as well)

Not all insurance companies would care if, for example you have 7+ years NCB, and won't give you any credit for driving history outside of Canada (a couple do take this into consideration but most don't). That being said, it would seem very unfair to penalize you for having points on your UK licence which they are choosing to disregard in the first place.
Expect to be unpleasantly suprised by the cost of auto insurance here. I am paying more than twice as much as I did in the UK
