Please advise : New Doctor in Canada
Dear Firends,
One of my friend is MBBS, Surgeon of Urology, Master in Urology, just migrated to Toronto, Canada.
Would you please advise what is the procedure so that we can get license to be a surgeon in Canada.
Thank you in advance
Regards
Armas

Basically its a long and rocky road, laid out here, the highest hurldle being the requirement of Completion in Canada of one year of postgraduate training or active medical practice which has very limited openings at present for non canadian grads.
He should also maybe contact the Ontario Medical Association and also maybe some of the local hospital recruiting bodies as they may have some demand for his services and be able to help fastrack or arrange for supervision to meet the one year supervised practice requirement. My local board is always looking to recruit, but in the case of the English Doctor they recently signed, he cant start to practice here for at least another couple of years. Other than that he has a few years delivering pizza or driving a taxi to look forward to as you cant practice in Canada unless you have done an internship in Canada, and there are VERY few places available after all the Canadian medical grads take the first choice.
A quote from the CPSO site makes depressing reading...Currently, there are only 50 specialist assessment positions available each year. In addition, the current assessments rank candidates in relation to others, and only the top achievers are eligible to continue with their training.
Many International Medical Graduates may meet acceptable clinical standards and be willing to upgrade their training, but they are ineligible because others scored higher on the testing and because of the limited number of training positions available.
