Places to Live In Nova.....
Okay - what are Bedford, Sackville (of the Lower variety) and Eastern Passage like as places to live with two smallish children? I am currently looking for a rental and have no idea where to look!
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me! |
Re: Places to Live In Nova.....
Hi,
What's your plan? short/long stay? - there are busy and quiet places in both. Are there other places you will visit? |
Re: Places to Live In Nova.....
I don't know anything about living in the Eastern Passage. Bedford ranges from nice, to very very nice (and expensive), and Lower Sackville is full of regular families. Apparently there are some iffy bits of Lower Sackville, but that is more likely to be on Sackville Drive at night, rather than in any particular housing subdivision.

Eastern Passage is very nice, within spitting distance of the ocean. Its small town feel. Some new developments going on there. The schools are really great because of the small town feel.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me! There is no high school but they are campaigning to have one built as 2000 kids get shipped out to cole harbour and dartmouth each day, although there are good elementary schools for the younger kids. There are new developments going up regularly through heritage hills, with some lovely reasonably priced propertys. This is one of the few HRM areas with good prices, once the high school comes watch out for a quick rise in property prices |

Re: Places to Live In Nova.....
I dont know the area of Windsor at all, but I have found that when you drive around there are often signs in house windows saying for rent. Also there are the classifieds, again dont know when they come out in that local paper. But putting your own add on Kijiji would help. There must also be some rental agencies in Windsor, try and google them and just ring them, often the rental listings online our out of date, so ring.
Good luck! |

Re: Places to Live In Nova.....
I know that feeling of always seeking home girl! I am starting to wonder if it is more about (for me) understanding the TV schedule better and accessing my favourite chocolate more easily (Galaxy minstrels). I have to say, I am feeling surprisingly happy here in the 2 weeks we have been here, hope springs eternal! Search for Minstrels continue until MIL sends care package...............until then on a one woman mission to find a suitable local replacement.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me! We lived in Bedford for 3 years prior to our return 5 years ago. Bedford is a great place to live especially if you have young children - good schools - lakes to swim in - excellent yacht club - good supermarkets( especially Pete's Fruitique if you miss food from home!). Housing might be a bit more expensive but the quality of life there is very good. We are considering moving back - looking forward to the great summers - not sooooo much the winters - but then you do have the Hockey to look forward to! Liff |

We are just going out to look at a couple of houses over that way this morning - yes we are still searching! I may yet have to get the tent out of the trailer and live in that!
Areas like Papermill Lake, Nottingham, Brookshire off Hammonds Plain Rd are all good places to live and the estates up by the new(ish) school are good places to bring children up as they are very safe. Shopping is excellent in Bedford with Sobey's and Atlantic superstore and of course the 2 malls (Sunnyside is great!). Don't know if it is still the case but I do remember it being difficult to get registered with a local doctor as most had closed books - perhaps others on this site can help with this issue. Good Luck - with the winter you are seeing NS at it's worst - just wait for the summers they're glorious. Liff |
Re: Places to Live In Nova.....
Hi there I agree if you can get through the next month then you are seeing the weather at its worst! although beautiful sunny day today and all the rain means no more snow shovelling ...the Family Focus walk in clinics are great some are now open on a Sunday as the wait at emergency would take hours ..
if you havent registered with a Dr. yet..mine is taking new patients at Family Focus in the Superstore on Joseph Howe Drive, Halifax:D http://www.thefamilyfocus.ca/ ...June |
Re: Places to Live In Nova.....
That is encouraging to hear, about the summers! Though the winter has been ok because of novelty for us, and only having been here 3 weeks!
Good luck with Bedford AmyDavid, sounds really nice, would like to hear what you think, we havent had the chance to look out there yet. Happy hunting! |
Re: Places to Live In Nova.....
Thought you might like to know that they are hoping to relieve the traffic congestion along Bedford Highway which can really hold you up if travelling into Halifax for work at peak times...
The proposal below was suggested in 2006....:D We now have a house in Woodlawn Dartmouth and have surprisingly found it faster to get to downtown from here at peak times .something we never would have discovered as we have lived Halifax Side in West End for over ten years.. "Halifax Regional Council has given the green light to a fast ferry between Bedford and downtown Halifax, despite the reservations of a number of councillors. The $30-million project was approved in principle, meaning funding must now be secured from other levels of government before commuters can actually cross the Bedford Basin on high-speed ferries. A study presented to council Tuesday night says there is support for the idea and that it could work if the municipality uses two ferries, each capable of carrying 350 people. The report also recommends providing free parking at the ferry terminal and charging a one-way fare of $5. Coun. Linda Mosher doesn't think a $5 fare is necessary, but believes it is time to start using the harbour to reduce traffic congestion. "One only has to drive down the Bedford Highway in the morning and try to turn left," said Mosher. "It's impossible. The traffic is completely blocked."stion along Bedford Highway by adding another ferry" June |

Some travel time will give him some *man* time so that he can get straight in and get straight into it, my OH is loving the bus journey he is making because he has 25 minutes of MP3 time!
Did you see some nice houses and what did you think of Bedford? |

Re: Places to Live In Nova.....
I looked at a couple of places in Windsor in October but they were very disappointing compared to the details. Send me the link and I will tell you if I have seen it.

Re: Places to Live In Nova.....
No this one was on some acres and probably abput 260 something, I was browsing for fun....................looking right up to 4 million - hugely entertaining and great info for when we win some lottery that we never enter!
We are on the cusp of Spryfield and Flemming Heights..........according to our landlady........but pretty much Spryfield. Not got a good rep, but I have driven through similar and worse in other areas round town, so we have no complaints. That and we arent in the middle of it, we are still towards the nice end of Herring Cove Road. So up Herring Cove Rd after the Armdale Rotary and we are before/opposite Sobeys, about 1-2 km from the rotary. ( I am quietly hoping for a slump in house prices so that we can swoop in and grab a bargain..................well we were the sellers in that kind of market when we sold, so its about time it happened IN my favour!!!!) Fingers crossed for you too! |

Re: Places to Live In Nova.....
Yes lynpy, thats the one!! It looks lovely..........though OH shrugged when I showed him it, because he cant face having to drive into Halifax and get a parking space each day! We are just living in fantasy right now, but do let me know what you think if you view it! I just loved it, we are into decorating and I love that era of house. How funny you knew where I meant! And the house market is NOT that fast here, especially in the periferies, so you never know! When are you thinking of coming for a reccie and moving here??
Hey AmyDavid, did you see the house yet and did you like it?? |
Re: Places to Live In Nova.....
Hi Poppy2
Looks like we'll be over for the first 2 weeks in May! I'm just figuring out where we are going to stay and how I can make the reccie a bit of a holiday for the kids without wasting valuable time. Windsor and Wolfville are both high on my list of places to live as we hope to work around the Kentville area but have easy access to Halifax & the south shore. I'm embarassed to say I spend far too much time window shopping on mls.ca when really I should be putting my energies into getting to NS!:o Where are you? Lynda |
Re: Places to Live In Nova.....
We have not long been here ourselves, just over 2 weeks, and we had not been over for a single reccie visit, so mls was our friend too!
We need to be pretty central for Halifax as we will both be working here and dont fancy really long commutes - though I did say for that house in Windsor I would consider it, which scared OH! Maybe when you come over you can have alternate days for reccie stuff and for holiday stuff. Couldnt possibly advise you on what to do and where to go, but there really do seem to be some good things to do here. All depends on the age of the kids. We are in Halifax, not far from the Armdale Rotary, on Herring Cove Road, if you know it. Not my ideal permanent location, but fine for now! Hope those tickets are booked, maybe we can catch up when you come over, we have a 10, 5 year old and an 18 month old. |
Re: Places to Live In Nova.....
Having no reccie before you landed sounds both scary and extremely adventurous!
So how are you finding life in NS now you've landed and presumably already started working - and with 3 kids to get settled!?!! Tomorrow I will be booked on flights for 3 May, presuming my meeting with sons headmistress goes ok. |
Re: Places to Live In Nova.....
Yes, we do seem to fly by the seat of our pants rather a lot, we move to New Zealand for the last 4 years on a whim, but that worked out well enough, so we thought we would do it again before schooling got really serious. We are here for the longhaul now, and really pleased with our choice. It met the needs we identified that were lacking from the UK and NZ, so thus far it is a thumbs up. And being the worst time of year to land, the summer and fall should be great.
Hope the headmistress is feeling magnanimous when you see her , sounds exciting! And get those tickets sorted. PM me and we could meet up if you fancy a coffee. |
