Pickering/Whitby/Ajax...Area Info...Ontario
Hi
Anyone living in the Pickering area or nearby, is it a nice place to live as in crime, tidyness, nights out, general info on this area would be nice.
Looking to rent a house first and will buy when market picks up in the UK so we can sell our house to fund it.
Looking to move in October, Pickering/Whitby looked OK on our last visit in 2007. Meds ect all done and got job offer in east toronto area .
Thanks Mag.....

Any information on places not to live in the Duram Region would also be of interest, nowere is perfect, bit like comparing Moss Side and Hale, if you get my drift, Moss Side not exactly a place you would recomend a new Imigrant to the UK to set up home with family.
We want to stay East of Toronto as it is nearer to work.

We live in Whitby at the moment - moved last September. The area is very quiet (especially compared to Moss Side, I would think ) No gangs hanging round etc. A very calm place.
We have three kids and all attend a local school which must admit feel very impressed with. All settled in without much of a problem! Even our now 13 year old
Also husband travels on the go train to Toronto to work every day! No trains have ever been cancelled but he got stuck on a couple for an hour or so last winter!!!!
Some nice places to eat and the cinema area gets busy! Lots of places, pubs/restaurants/clubs to socialise there. Good luck on your move.

Thanks for that Petemaz.
we drove round Whitby on our last visit and it looked like a place we could settle, we live in a small village outside of Blackpool and it had that feel to it.
we also have a 13yr old lad who loves playing soccer, we have emailed Pickering Soccer club and they look like a good club to have him transfered to, waching our son play soccer is our weekend hobby and we feel also a good way to meet the neibours and intergrate into Canadian life, (we think, we made lots of friends in the Uk this way)? He also a dab hand at baseball.

Hi nextphase
I went over last Aug 2007, had an interview and got a Job offer with a company in Toronto, we were there on a two week Reccie, got all the paperwork together upon our return ect, applied in May 08, had medicals Aug 6th with bit oluck expect to get PR visa end Sept 08.
It all linked in with having an offer of employment, and we used a good rep in Canada who has helped loads, but she in BC. so dosnt know the Duram area.
Glad to hear it nice there, think it comfirmed our first impressions but it good to get first hand experiance from people living there.
Thanks for the input. mag....

I moved out in Dec last year, was in Toronto. Then moved to Pickering four months ago.
The area is nice, quiet and a nice contrast from the busy city.
I work down town and the drive can be long, on a good day 50mins but can take 90mins. The winter months will tell as it could take some time to get to work.
The GO train in right in Pickering and the Pickering Town Centre has all the shop you will ever need. The water front is nice. All in all nice place.
We have family in Ajax as well. Nice area.
Another bonus is the houses are cheaper when you go away from the city.

thankyou raymate.
I like the idea of cheaper housing, and a 90 min commute would be nice, I live in blackpool and commute to birmingham / londun ect today I have to drive home from totnam,(writing this on my mobil pda).
will be doing the same in the gta, I work in a difrent area each day,and feel pickering would be a good base to start from.

I've just spent 6 months at Whites & Kingston (a.k.a. Whites & 401) and thought it was great. As I had no car I either commuted with my buddy to his job on the east side of TO or I walked the 10 minutes down to Kingston and took the GO bus. Worked like a charm.
No worries walking hom from the bus in the middle of the night either.
I wouldn't exactly say there is lots to do at night. There is an Irish pub by the strip mall where I was. 24hr Dominion, doctors, drug store etc.
Pickering Town Center is a somewhat good mall but better to go to Scarborough Town Center.
All in all I can see myself living in the area once I get the down town buzz out of my system.

Thanks YY
Had a good feeling about the area when we did our reccy lasy year, but it was only from looking from the outside, its good to have our feelings comfirmed by someone living in and around that area.
Cheers Mag...
