Default phone plans

DD will be a student from September in Canada. We currently have a US tmobile plan which may work but was wondering if anyone could recommend a plan? Like most kids her age, heavy data use but mostly on wifi and will need to be able to call USA.
thanks!

Might be worth waiting until she is in Canada, deals can be found but you may need to go into a physical location and haggle.

We are with Fido owned by Rogers, no issues with them, We pay $60 something currently 7gb data + 3 bonus GB they can remove at anytime but haven't in the 3 years we have had Fido, unlimited Canada wide long distance, unlimited worldwide texting. Long distance to US/rest of world is per minute charge but there are add on's.

Also keep in mind:

Virgin = Bell
Koodoo = Telus
Public Mobile = Telus
Fido = Rogers

Those are big 3 telecoms.

Freedom is a smaller carrier owned by Shaw, not as big of a network, but roaming is available outside home zone, depending on needs they can work out cheaper and worth looking into./

Public Mobile as far as I know is a bring your own device, you buy their SIM card, and pick a plan type deal.

There are often student deals available nearer to September... it might be worth waiting. There's lots of threads in the Canada Forum about Cell phone plans if you do a search

You could look at websites such as this.. for ideas on costs https://www.planhub.ca/ontario/compa...1-5-8-6-7-4-10

I use Freedom - they have lots of specials (double data at present) plus a special Canada / US plan with lots of data but it's not cheap https://www.freedommobile.ca/en-CA/plans

Freedom mobile is likely to be the cheapest option for big data usage. If most of the usage is on wifi then would using Skype whatsap etc be an option instead of calling the US? If the phone needs to work on both sides of the border then Telus has plans for that. I have am with Telus for that reason alone as I am over the border up to 5 days a week.
