No one knows when it starts.
It's had no real coverage over here yet so only fans of it seem to know it's on.
I thought it was unfortunate that Vancouver got the games at all (no offense to the beautiful Vancouver). I just thought that Quebec City made a better bid back in the 1990s and lost out, so felt a bit bitter.
But really, I don't care about all the rubbish rhetoric that surrounds the Olympics no matter where they're held. The winter games themselves, on the other hand, are one of my favourite sporting events in the world.

I wouldn't think the UK has huge numbers of target audience to be honest.

Trouble is 99% do not watch or have access to Eurosport as it is not free to air.

They might have sky but Eurosport does not get a very good audience, the Olympics has not been advetised on main stram media which has surprised me.

The World championship athletics or gymnastics also don't make the mainstream for advertising.
Fans will be aware of it in the similar vain that Motorcycle racing fans are aware of the BSB, WBSK, MotoGP calendars etc and the advertising is targeted, not mainstream.

Why would it be mainstream? Winter Olympics in the UK isn't mainstream. Maybe the Nordic regions and such countries/areas, but not the UK. It never has been. The advertising for such an event would be aimed at the target audience.

I don't have Sky so I'm really hoping the BBC at least show the hockey

As with the Summer games there are some events that have universal appeal and many events only appeal to the aficionados of that discipline. Watching cross-country skiing/biathalon events can be the same as watching paint dry, good for very short periods. Almost all the downhill/freestyle skiing disciplines can, IMO, be really exciting to watch. There is a worldwide audience for figure/ice dance skating events which I personally do not like and won't watch. Short-track speed skating can be good to watch. I don't know why the BBC would televise much ice hockey. It's not a hugely supported sport in the UK and would probably only attract a small audience.

Until we have another Torvill & Dean, no one in Great Britain really gives a crap about the Winter Games...we are not exactly renowned for our huge medal collection

) but I'll still be pleasantly surprised if they show the games on BBC.

I saw the BBC ad today for the first time & quite liked it - it is a change from dancing animals, wheel chairs etc.

Not sure when the ads started, but I will be watching a fait bit - for someone who other than the odd iceskating party has never taken part in any of the sports, I always have like watching it.

Husband says to wife, "My Olympic condoms have arrived... I think I'll wear Gold tonight."
Wife says "Why not wear Silver and come second for a change."
