Default Paypal grief

Appreciate the joy of sending funds across the Atlantic without giving the banks yet another chance to stiff me. Alas for me none of the big boys ala XE, HIFC etc but paypal due to smallish amounts to be sent.

However huge show stopper with setting up cross country accounts (1st in Canada, 2nd in Blighty) is data verification. Stage 1 aka Bank info confirmation o.k. as online facility on my accounts shows me paypal’s deposits on either end. Stage 2 palavar is need to have paypal call you at home number where you receive your statements uugghhh – no way to overcome this unless you are physically in both countries...hey houdini wan't a paypal account

Any option on this – pointless flying to the other country just for the call....completely defeats the objective. I guess I got to leave it till I’m next in the relevant country. By the way anyone upgraded to premium account and how do you rate it…my cheapo account only allows a paltry 650 CAN dollars deposit per month….just enough to pay the hydro

What is it that you are trying to achieve exactly? Are you living in Canada but have income in the (rental income for example) UK you want to transfer to Canada? Or vice versa? Your post is not clear enough about what you are trying to do, only how you are trying to do it.

No - I couldn't understand the post either.

I do some work for an English company that requires me to be paid through Paypal. I upgraded to a premium account and although I have only received one month's pay so far - for September - it worked perfectly. The only thing I might have done wrong and that is that it asked me if I wanted to convert to US dollars and I said yes. I am thinking that the next time I will say "no" because maybe I get charged each time the funds are converted and I should be converting from sterling to Canadian dollars rather than into US dollars first.

Works fine for me. I got an email saying the money had been deposited. I went into my Paypal account and transferred the money to my bank account in Canada and it was there in about 5 days.

Not sure why we need to know why you are transferring money , that isn't relevant I wouldn't have thought.

I believe, and I may be wrong here, but when setting up the account and waiting for your telephone call for verification, it is automated and therefore anyone can answer this call so you could use a UK phone number (family or friends) and just synchronise the call's arrival with when they will be at home to accept the call.

I have a Premium Account and have never had any problems whatsoever with it.

Sorry for the confusion.

I currently reside in Canada but have income from consulting work for a UK client that is paid into my UK bank account. I need to move some of these funds to Canada hence the use of paypal. I have set up 2 paypal accounts one with details of my Canadian bank the other with those of my UK bank.

I have confirmed respective bank details = stage 1 of paypal verfication by correctly updating my paypal accounts with the funds that paypal deposited into each account.

For stage 2 paypal state they need to call my home number as given in my paypal accounts. No problem for Canada but an issue for UK as I'm not physically there. Tiaribbon's response indicates this is not an issue since anyone can answer the phone but surely this defeats the purpose to verify that you are the actual account holder by asking questions that only I have the answers to. Has anyone else had the same experience that Tiaribbon has?

My other questions were:

1. What is the deposit limit for a premium account - GBP and CAN?

2. What is the send limit for a premium account - GBP and CAN?

3. Once I transfer the funds from the UK to Canada is paypal's cut/commission/fee for deposits such that you are better of with XE, HIFC - I appreciate it may depend on sums being transfered.

I hope this is more clear and thanks for all your responses. I do appreciate them.

Just to clarify what I had to do; On my account I followed the instructions via Internet on the Paypal address where it asks "do you want to become verified?" You click "yes" and then it asks when you would like a telephone to confirm "now or later", so you just click whenever is convenient to both parties.

You might want to look at this option if you can make regular monthly payments of £250 or more. It has several advantages including fixing the exchange rate for up to 2 years. That means you will always know exactly how many $ you are going to receive.
