Paying for a car on arrival?
#1
Just wondering - what's the normal method for paying for a 2nd hand car from a dealer in Canada?
I already have a Canadian bank account with cheques, debit card (only £400 a day limit though) and Mastercard ($5k limit).
What's the "normal" method of payment?

I'm sure you have, but did you get your insurance details with no claims record etc.....
just in case, see the one I used which was posted some time ago........

I've managed to get one letter so far covering about 4 years, need to send off another which will cover another 4 - giving 8 in total! Whether they will accept it or not is anyone's guess! Fingers crossed...

The $400 limit is just for cash withdrawls isn't it, you can use a debit card up to any amount, as long as the funds are in that account. We have used our RBC debit card to pay for big items in the past.

Hi,
Banker drafts are definitely the way to go when purchasing a vehicle. We bank with Community Savings so bankers drafts are free and can be done on the spot. Just ensure that the amount is correct, including the tax and registration fees etc (if it is from a dealer).
When we first came over we ran into the same trouble with a daily limit on our new debit card. We went and spoke to our bank who agreed to up the limit on certain days when we wanted to pay for our larger purchases, such as TV's, furniture etc.

If you have cheques, then just give them a cheque. The big manufacturer dealers don't usually have a problem with this. Perhaps don't tell them you have just landed.
