you could always invest in some things for your boots, yaktraks i do believe they're called, fits on your boots and gives you extra grip by digging into the ice when you walk... but in the city? if you're under 25, you wear trainers and just slide along...

I've never heard of anyone ever wearing "spiked boots" of any kind. It sounds somewhat odd, but I suppose it could happen. Most people wear boots, or if they're tough they wear shoes. Unless you live in rural areas the only time you usually have wade into snow is for recreation and to shovel out driveways (and whenever there's a blizzard-depending on where you live that could happen often, but I haven't seen a decent blizzard in few years).

In Calgary the side-walk is the bit you walk on. The pavement is the road - I found this out when I told a Canadian 5year old to walk on the pavement. He looked at me as if I had lost my mind!
Calgary has by-laws to ensure clear sidewalks. If you dont clear within a certain length of time the city can send a crew round to do it for you - they follow this with a bill.
Roads are snowploughed according to priority. Main highways, bus routes , school bus routes and then other roads. Specific requests can get them out for other roads to spread grit.
