I meant that...about the road surfaces, I mean. I have seen ads for properties which claim "pavement", ie made-up road. rather than dirt track!
Just what I heard from the natives I used to live with...

Yes I was going to suggest those. I saw people wearing them when we were last over there, walking a frozen canyon......very tricky even in walking boots!!, and I'm getting to old to slither about!!!

.....but I couldn't think what they were called....they did look good!

Galoshes or Rubbers I think...

No not galoshes or rubbers, they were spikey things that they strapped to the soles of their footwear!

I've never heard of anyone ever wearing "spiked boots" of any kind. It sounds somewhat odd, but I suppose it could happen. Most people wear boots, or if they're tough they wear shoes. Unless you live in rural areas the only time you usually have wade into snow is for recreation and to shovel out driveways (and whenever there's a blizzard-depending on where you live that could happen often, but I haven't seen a decent blizzard in few years).

In Calgary the side-walk is the bit you walk on. The pavement is the road - I found this out when I told a Canadian 5year old to walk on the pavement. He looked at me as if I had lost my mind!

Calgary has by-laws to ensure clear sidewalks. If you dont clear within a certain length of time the city can send a crew round to do it for you - they follow this with a bill.

Roads are snowploughed according to priority. Main highways, bus routes , school bus routes and then other roads. Specific requests can get them out for other roads to spread grit.
