I still have a propertry back in London, and the way things are going there, are of interest to me. Where have i knocked what others had to say, in this thread before she jumped in. Again...you spout crap about nothing, my mum is half scandinavian, and my dad is half Irish, that is how i managed to get those passport to go with my british passport. All that was ignored in the post you lifted that from.

I went travelling to the places i did, i wasn't there as an immigrant, hope this is pretty clear now, i don't have to repeat myself. May be you should go back and see how this started.

So everyone planning to leave Canada is a failure?

And it is very rude to talk to me in the third person.
There is nothing wrong about criticizing Canada in the first place - as long as it's fair and truthful, and on another thread.

You did say that you can't stand Toronto's humidity - fair enough.

Someone should tell my wife! You are totally missing my 2 points, (or perhaps are "too thick to understand the contents") by getting into the genealogical details of your ancestry, so I'll spell them out again.

You have no right to judge anyone here, if you dont like them stick them on your ignore list, it works just fine!

There is every need for posts critical of canada here, otherwise you may as well read the tourism ontario website for all the real world use it will be.

All us expats have left a country, those wanting to come to canada want to leave a country. We are still allowed to comment on our experience, why should Babsi be any different. I personally could care less who said what to whom first, we are suppost to be adults and behave like adult, this is not J.K. Opinions are just that, and are neither right or wrong. Normally the only time I will criticise a post is if it is factually inacurate.

I am not going to cry crocodile tears for someone having a go at you, you are always one of the first to have a go in other threads. Maybe you could use the ignore feature if she pisses you off that much. For the record she never actually named anyone, and I for one wondered who she was refering to until you made it so obvious.

Everytime someone disagrees with you you take it so personally, and then before long you post some nasty slur or comment or other. Jees, get over it will you! And yes I live in the "boonies", all of 15 mins from the 401 and a gut wrenching 90 mins from TO. Most people here know that by now, but you seem unable to resist the temptation to comment every chance you get, like it makes my view inferior in some way. I think that says more about you than it does me.

Am I the only one here who sees some hipocracy? Nice house though, what are the property taxes like on that? and where is it anyway? Personally I dont see any harm in topics spreading from there original narrow target, its part of the "all in this together" nature of the board, its nice to know peoples backgrounds to some extent.

Besides, I used to love the view from Thurstuston Common over the Dee estuary. Shit, they used to make us run up that bloody hill for Cross country at CGGS! I dont see it as very different to you discusing parts of docklands or Brick Lane in other threads anyway, just cos it not your neck of the woods, relax will ya

Iain

Yes Thurstuston common does have nice views over the River Dee.

Ness gardens has nice views as well.

I don't think mickj has access to the "ignore feature" any more since he got banned a few hours ago.

Apparently this is the second time he got banned. I understand that after the first time, he just used a different moniker. He once accused me of living in a "bedsit" (whatever that is) in Kitchener (I was/am in Mexico) and stocking him!!!! Weird.

Just to put in my '2 cents' worth, that guy was really irritating me too and I often refrained from speaking up for fear of the wrath. He accused people of never fully reading the posts but it was obvious he didn't always get it right either. Hurrah!

Getting back to topic of thread--where to settle in Ontario?

Given one is an RN and other is a millright, water is wanted and somewhere where property is not so expensive I'd still vote for Sarnia or Windsor area and go for the work visa in the US. Perhaps am greed but as I see how nursing is going and has been going in Ontario, most of our nurses have gone to the states for a reason.

Pay is not so good here, work conditions are cruddy and still to date not enough money is being put into healthcare. Midst of a huge political struggle with doctors wanting more pay and more rights and big questions as to privatization of health care makes the nursing scene here less than attractive. So once you have Ontario license I'd be making haste to send of and write the Michigan one as well. New York one as well if you want to apply to Buffalo. American dollar is a good bit higher than Canadian dollar so if you can manage to drive an hour (which if you choose to live in Toronto area and commute to work is still a good hour, just different kind of traffic) to and from work, for the 17$/hour you would be getting in Canadian hospital you would be making at least 25$ /hour in Detroit and actually bringing home around 37$/hour in Canadian dollars. I know of several nurses in these parts who are working part time hours in the States, living in Canada and are getting paid more than they would for fulltime work in Canada.

Property is cheaper in these areas and we are still next to very good beaches though if you are addicted to the salt air you'd best be headed out to BC or the Maritimes. Toronto is cool if you like big cities and I guess for that matter has the 'big city' advantages. However, market prices are way higher there. Renting an apartment or townhouse for example--TO your looking at at least 1k/month for a decent 2 bedroom whereas Sarnia/Windsor area your looking more at 600$/month for a nice 2 bedroom. Food costs here are quite a bit cheaper and in general the total cost of living is cheaper. And we are still only a 4 hour drive from Toronto so often times we can be found heading there before Christmas or something to take advantage of a hotel, semi-holiday and the extra shopping which I like from the vendors and such on Young Street and such.

Would suggest checking out the websites. Sarnia has one, Windsor does as does most of the cities around so that might not be a bad idea.

Wish you luck on your search.

Thanks Taira, for all your advice, I'm in the process of applying for a RN Ontario license presently. Is Sarnia/Windsor near Niagra? It's just that we'll be there for a couple of days in May and may hire a car and go take a look if it's not too far.

No, Sarnia/Windsor is not near Niagara. Not to argue with Taira, but you should realize that Windsor/Sarnia is the hottest part of Ontario and has significant air quality problems. Windsor has the highest humidex rating in Canada (i.e. hot and humid). Sarnia isn't what I would call "pretty".

If you go to a city on the Niagara peninsula you can be just as close to the US as Windsor or Sarnia. Fort Erie, Ontario is right across the border from Buffalo, New York.

I don't think anyone would claim that Windsor/Sarnia are as beautiful as Niagara-on-the-Lake and its environs.

The air right inside Sarnia, especially the south side which is by the chemical plants is certainly less than perfect. As stated its sort of comparable to the air in Hamilton though in all honesty I don't think its any worse than some of the areas in Toronto since there are far fewer people. For 200 K you can have a very nice 5 or 6 bedroom house or a 3 bedroom house with maybe an acre or so of land whereas the same in the Toronto area will get you about 1/2 as much. Air on the northern side or Point Edward area (which is right by the bridge to U.S. and very close to water) is significantly better. Being so close to chemical valley means there is industry here with work going in the trades. The same is true of the St. Catherines, Niagara Falls area though in both areas for the millwrights I am certain there are a good amount of 'travel jobs' that are going.

As to which area is 'nicer' I would say that is open to interpretation. Perhaps I am biased since I have a lot of fond memories in Sarnia and it is currently my home town, but I have friends in the Niagara Falls, St. Catherines area that I visit and although the 'falls' itself is magnificent, as far as attractiveness of the actual city goes I find pluses and minuses in whichever area a person decides upon and, personally prefer the Sarnia/Chatham/Windsor regions. It is true we are a little further south and the air is slightly more humid but the pays off in the winter months when we are a degree or two higher and frequently miss the snow-falls that hit even the London area which is about a 45 minute drive. Snow here, falls less frequently and less severly than in the other cities in Ontario for example, end of November to end of February is our typical snow cover time as compared a little bit longer on both sides of the year for London, Kitchener areas and even longer once you start going further north. I am one who doesn't mind the snow but after a couple of months of it I am looking forward to the spring. I prefer rural areas which are close (10 to 20 minutes drive) to the conveniences of a good sized town rather than a good hour or so and I certainly love having my garden--something which I wouldn't be able to afford in Toronto for certain.

Niagara Falls as well as Toronto is about a 3 to 4 hour drive from here--a good bit less once you are used to the roads and such, Windsor is about 2 hours if that. Being a part of the piping community in my teenage years I used to commute to Niagara Falls for band practise every weekend and sometimes on Thursday nights and in the summer many of the games were in and around the Toronto area and in the little towns inbetween. If you picture a lobsided rectangle with London being the left tophand corner, then Toronto would be the top right hand corner, Niagara Falls the bottom right and Windsor the bottom left. Sarnia is a little closer to London but before Windsor on that side. All are well drivable for day trips though to make a decent day of it, starting early in the morning would be an idea. As one who has lived in London, Sarnia, Windsor and stayed in Niagara Falls and Toronto for shorter periods (ie, couple of months at a time) as far as 'prettiness' goes I honestly can see pluses and minuses in all areas. Sarnia, not being 'pretty' is entirely a matter of opinion and a place that might be 'popular' in as far as reputation goes is not so pretty when the cost of living puts a strain on being able to really do much.

Though certainly the 'falls' part of Niagara Falls and St Catherines area is certainly breath taking, it is my opinion that the actual town itself is less attractive than Sarnia for certain is especially during the winter months. And I guess its good to take into consideration peoples opinions regarding any new place. For sheer beauty, I'd probably suggest the Collingwood, Barrie area though again the properties are getting more pricey and you are getting into far colder territory.

If I were in your shoes, I honestly would apply to as many places for work first and then see about which offer is better, which company has the better reputation and then go from there as far as finding a place to live goes. I remember being further up north in Bruce County and to be totally honest, I haven't seen another place like it that compares to sheer beauty of a place to be. The land there is incredible with many little rivers and waterfalls and 'secret' little places to go for walks, yet because industry isn't so great its not the easiest place to live. Trying all border towns keeps other options open as far as your work goes and if you remain open to the pluses of each individual area one can usually find happiness wherever they finally decide to stay.

My Mom owns a cottage in Bruce County, and my brother lives there. Collingwood, Wasaga and the Blue Mountain areas are very nice indeed.

I have to agree with your comments regarding the City of Niagara Falls (and everything else you said) - the city itself isn't very impressive - although the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake certainly is impressive. However, one has to consider that the Niagara Falls area has $2 billion dollars worth of revitalization going on. When I visited the area about 7 years ago, I though the city was rather crappy looking and that it was in dire need of major investment dollars. Shortly after, that is exactly what occurred. I toured the area just last summer and the transformation was remarkable - although more must be done. It has two casinos - the newest one is big and beautiful and will open this June. New golf courses and one of the largest aquariums in the world will be built there. They will start building a monorail system before long - it's called the "people mover".

Tourism is the biggest employer in the city of Niagara Falls. The economy of the Niagara region is very diverse however. The last time I checked, Niagara Region had the lowest unemployment rate in Ontario.

Thanks for the websites- the slideshow of Niagra Falls is brilliant! We're staying in one of the falls hotels in May! The info very useful too. Thanks
