I have just started to look for a job, I cannot do what I did in the UK, which is a Support Worker with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, think I will have to update my training, pass a course, .

Hi there,

I too work in the Care Industry with Adults with Larning Difficulities. I found that that employers here have accepted my Uk Qualifications. I have a University Diploma in Health and Social Care and I have my Level 3 SVQ in Health and Social Care I also have over 7 years experience and various in house training courses.
I found though in order to get on the top rate I had to do my -

First Aid (Standard) and CPR Level C
Non Violent Crisis Intervention
Whimis
Medication Awareness

I found that once I had these courses I could command a higher rate so it is worth it. You can get these courses in the Community Colleges in your area.
I hope this helps, if you need anymore info feel free to PM me.

[QUOTE=purple80;6770976]Hi,
What were your qualifications if you don't mind me asking?
Am limited by work permit condition's so until we get PR am a bit stuck!

Nothing very grand I'm afraid ........
10yrs experience
LSA (Learning support) course at local college (Bristol)
6 week COSI course (Communication & social interaction, Bristol)
St John Ambulance level 1 first aid & CPR (BC)
Non violent intervention (BC)

Plus a few other in-house bits n bobs since I've been here ...... they are keen on Popard (Provincial Outreach Program for Autism & Related Disorders) in my little bit of BC but to be honest, what helped most in getting the job in the first place was keeping on/seeming interested (I phoned the school district every 4 weeks ) & a reference from the HR lady's mate!!

Am assuming you are in a similar boat to myself - can't work with young people being a restriction on TWP. Maybe worth looking into doing similar work with adults if there is any going?

Welcome to Canada!!!!!

Welcome to Canada!!!!!
Yes, in the same boat, restrictions on my WP are teaching, healthcare and childcare, which effectivly rules most things out!

Am currently looking for anything, but everywhere wants you to work shifts, I can only work in school hours as OH is Maintenance Manager, and ends up staying late at work or being called in at what ever time needed.

This means that I have to be around for the children, guess we really need to pull our finger out and get the PR done!

PS. Thanks for the welcome

Charlie

Wow - Charlie can't believe i've only just read this and have been looking too.

What a great welcome with the car and the champers and everything - your pics look amazing the kids adorable.

I remember everything we spoke about as we polished off that bottle of blackcurrant vodka (think it was blackcurrant after all we did do the whole bottle)

No-one deserves this more than you and I mean that. Enjoy your new life Charlie and live it to the full
