Default opinions very much welcomed please!

I'm new to this site so Hi!

We're thinking of emigrating to Alberta and can't decide whether to go to Edmonton or Calgary. (Hubby is HGV driver) - opinions welcomed about which area you think?

Also have daughter doing GCSE exams Summer 2010. Should we wait for her to finish or just go and she go to school in Alberta (hubby needs to secure job 1st) so no rush. Been reading posts which say GCSE's not counted in Canada.

Edmonton has a more stable weather than Calgary, it's a white collar town and suits some. Calgary gets my vote, on the Trans Canada highway (may be a big deal if OH is doing long haul).

'O' level GCSE don't count for a lot here, although with the 'A' level GCSE she could likley get a high school equivalency. They graduate school in Grade12 (18) with a high school diploma (hopefully). If your duaghter is 15/16 she might be better off moving here and finishing high school. The alternative is do 'A' levels then move.

Hi there.
It is slightly, but only slightly, less straightforward to transfer systems at this age. At age 15/16, when UK children start Year 11 and prepare for their GCSE exams, Canadians are already moving up to senior high school which is three years, Grades 10-12 (compared to two years, Years 12-13, for the GCSE A levels).

So if a British-educated student waits to sit GSCE O levels, they can enter senior high Grade 11 with their peer age group. Their O level results will be given equivalency, so they don't have to go back and do Grade 10 over. Hope this helps.

I'd be careful about doing the A-levels first, as I think University of Calgary require 5 A-levels above grade D - see international students. Recommend going in for grade 11 and getting diploma that way. My first post too - so go easy ;-)

If one wants to go to university, best to check with them as to what they would accept.
