Think Kanetix is one, but that might just be car insurance?

Insurance agents handle various types of insurance or you can buy direct from companies such as Allstate or State Farm. Check Insurance in the Yellow Pages. There will be lots there.

Like many Canadian businesses, insurers don't seem to like giving out simple estimates or guidance.

You cannot buy separate contents insurance. Homeowners policies include contents, based on the house value and usually way over what you need. When renting you can buy a renters policy, which includes cover for your belongings. Go to an insurance broker (in the yellow pages), they will be able to help, but not today.

There is also Canadian Direct where you can get a quote online.

Another tip Four Bells, you can get a discount on house insurance if you get car insurance with them as well.

I hope you are all enjoying your time in Canada.

I just spent the last hour or two banging my head against a brick wall trying to buy renters insurance online... Including doing the dance with TD, and getting to the 'fill in a form repeating everything you just told us online, mail it to us, and wait 3 or 4 weeks and we'll get back to you' part.

Anyway, turns out that State Farm was happy to sell us insurance instantly online. Phew!

Beware of "Contents Insurance" over here. It's not the same as back home. I have two kids and a big dog, and was dismayed to find out that "accidental" damage is not covered (I ended up with Allstate.... I tried with 2 brokers and Allstate were the best of a bad bunch). In other words, if your 3 year old tips a can of paint over your antique Afghan Rug.... tough!

We're also not covered for natural floods.... or hurricanes.

Apparently this is all due to us being in our "first year" of home insurance... we should be able to add these to the policy next year.

Check what you're covered for. You'll be surprised.

I would think that no insurance covers any event of "force majeur" as they are completely outside of the control of human beings and as such cannot be attributed for in the risk assessment?
