Default One way ticket to Toronto

Hi guys,

First off, I have been accepted onto the IEC scheme and am literally at the last stage of booking a flight.

I'm really worried about gaining entry to Canada as I don't intend to activate my work permit when I land. Obviously the flight will be one way and, when I have a job (by July, hopefully) I will drive down to Niagara or Sarnia and activate my permit when I re-enter from the US.

My question is; what do I tell the border guard at Toronto to ensure they let me through?

Why get a one way flight? Return flights are cheaper anyway, so just get a return.

It's an extra ~£150 actually

Also, if I did that, what then? Won't someone chase it up if I just don't show up to the flight?

Really?

That's very odd - what airline, from/to?

No one chases it up. You can either just not show up, or call and cancel the day before the flight.

All of them from what I've seen! Airtransat is who I plan to buy the ticket with and it's ~269 each way compared to like ~330 one way.

Is this from the UK?

Go here:

http://www.aircanada.com/uk/en/home.html

And compare return vs one way.

Yeah it's still double the price than getting a one way ticket from Airtransat

I agree booking a one way trip is cheaper (Apart from AC who are V expensive anyway). In January we booked one way flights for family of four to Winnipeg, return price was £3485, one way was £2070. I always use www.skyscanner.net

The airline might not allow you to board on a one way ticket, even though CBSA will grant you entry to Canada, but the airline won't risk it. If you happen to be refused the airline is liable for the cost of your return. you could book a fully refundable return flight, that way you can prove to the airline that you have a return ticket then just cancel this once you are landed. It matters not that the return leg is booked with another airline. Expedia allow you to book fully refundable tickets.

Mind you, seeing as you have the IEC, that should be enough for the airline to grant you boarding. The best person to ask is former Lancastrian, he is a CBSA and will know the answer.

Regards

I contacted air transat as I have a one way ticket booked with them next month to fly to calgary I was checking as my husbands permit us for bc but he is transferring to calgary I rang them just to see if there would be any problems getting on the flight with technically the wrong twp for the province I'm going to, I spoke to several people at the London office none of them knew what I was going on about and said its not up to gem to check I had the right entry paperwork it was up to me, I'm taking this as they are not bothered and I won't have any problem flying with them!!

I'm going to PM Former Lancastrian and see what he has to say! Hopefully he can help me out!

I'd like to book the flight(s?) this week as I'm off in late May.

I'm thinking if I show them a Greyhound ticket to the US, an ESTA and my work documents that should work as proof of me leaving the country? (then re-entering to work)
