In the late 70's I lived in Calgary with my family for about 3 years. I was 9 or 10 at the time. However I had a sin card and still have it.
Is it possible to still use it,legally or otherwise?

it depends
if you old sin starts with a 9
then you need to get a new one after you land as 9 denotes not a Canadian as well as not a landed immigrant

Keep in mind that a SIN card does not, in and of itself, give a person permission to
work in Canada. If you're not a Canadian citizen or a legal permanent resident of
Canada, then you'll have to obtain permission to live and work in Canada first.

Stephen is right, even though you can still use the sin, its purpose is mostly for use by the ccra and hrdc to administer various tax and hr programs (income tax assessment identification, payments of ei, cpp etc).
a sin by itself is fairly useless unless you have the authorization by cic to live, and work legally in canada. they are two seperate things.
