Re: Oil Sector

I wouldn't say that's a scam, but they're just charging you do do what you could easily arrange to do yourself.

Can't you make investigations through the ironworkers union?

The long hard days shouldn't be a surprise, that's why the pay is good. There are plenty old guys here, just like on any other job, and lots of the projects - inlcuding mine - put the workers up in dry camps. You'll find more booze and drugs in the Calgary office than you will on our site.

90% of us get up at 4am every day. The only way you can do that day after day after day for weeks on end is to be asleep by 8:30pm. Camp life may be many things, but rock and roll it ain't.

That's hat I thought Jing, I'm used to working 15-18 per day starting at 5am, 7 days a week for 6-8 weeks.

If you have ever worked in China then you would know the conditions are extremely tough, dirty and quite often dangerous so nothing will surprise me.

I talked to the Ironworkers Union here in Ottawa, and Wow what a wate of space for info:frown:

I will look into the companies and get the info by leg work.

Hi there

Just wanted to add my 2 cents :) Last summer my hubby went out to Alberta and for one reason and another he decided to come back.
He went out and did a course with a company called Alberta Gateway, see link
http://albertagateway.com/

He found the whole experience really really good, he was going out to be a Class 1 driver. The course however is pricey, I think in total it was around $7,000 that includes your 2 week course, driving lessons, driving test, accommodation and breakfast everyday, but at the end of it provided you pass the Class 1 driving course then you are guaranteed a job, the only reason you wouldn't be offered a position is if you failed a drug test.

He was so impressed with the company, they really looked after all the guys that were there and he would highly recommend them to anyone.

I guess it really depends what it is you want to do and this company might not be what you are looking for, but from personal experience they were great to him. If you need any other advice please feel free to get in touch, good luck :)

Was it oil patch related Ms Bear or was it standard class 1 long haul?

Yes it was oil patch related, but some people on the course wanted to do it JUST for the Class 1 license, but all the companies that come in ARE from the oil industry!

Forgot to add, he would have been working on a fluid truck, they do maintenance on the wells, not really sure what that all means lol, but it sounded good fun :D

This may seem very strange and in the wrong place but....

Currently I am a teacher in England with dual citizenship.
I have worked many jobs through the years, mainly management based, although I did spend some time during my youth working electrical construction.

Moving back to the East Coast in the summer (Nova Scotia). What are the chances of landing work in the oil sector, preferably weeks on/weeks off with flights back to Nova Scotia???

Cheers

Re: Oil Sector

Well we live in NS too, my hubby would have done the whole fly in and out thing however it does depend on the work arrangement

Some guys work Oct-Dec with no break, then come home for Christmas, but then they go back out after Christmas and don't come back until April/May but this also depends on your family arrangement too.

My hubby is planning on going back out this year then we plan to move out in about 18 months when our son graduates from High School.

Re: Oil Sector

Family arrangements definitely dictate flying back and forth if at all possible.

Come from a family of tradespeople, I am the only egghead!

All of my family is in Nova Scotia which is the point of moving back to Nova Scotia from here.

Any information regarding work gratefully received :)
