Just a quick, probably complicated question. I am still serving British military, own a house in Canada, am a Canadian citizen but ahve never lived there permanently yet. I have sponsored my wife for PRV, which she has now.

I have been offered an offshore job in the Middle East, Tax-free, for at least a 4 year contract. If I was living in UK, I would register as non-dom and have to only be in-country for 90 days a year for the first 2 years at least. (Something like that - don'y take me to task!!). What I want to do is get out the Army, move to Canad and take this job offer up. What I don't want to do is pay tax on my earnings because that would negate the reason for doing it.

Is there therefore a similar non-dom, expat tax scheme in Canada as there is in UK. I am not trying trying to swindle anything just find out if it is worth getting this job.

from my knowledge (and its not extensive) it will boil down to whether or not you are deemed to be 'Tax Resident' in Canada.

From what I can gather several factors could make the authorities consider you a tax resident of Canada.....owning a house in Canada.....(and not owning a house anywhere else) would be a big factor......your wife and kids living in Canada whilst you were away would also be big factors.......holding bank accounts, credit cards investments in Canada would all be factors as well

I am sure that some one will be along with a definite answer. There is a whole section in the Canadian Inalnd Revenue Rules which is dedicated to this exact point

Well all of those factors apply and would apply when I move there - I ahev a house, wife and kids'll be there etc.

It's a bit of a show stopper for me actually - I may have to rent in the UK till I finish the offshore contract.

I just thought there must be Candian expats working abroad - oil industry whatever - - with homes and families in Canada.
