Default Nursing in Calgary.

Hi, I am a paediatric nurse in the uk and thinking of emigrating to Calgary with my family. However, I only have my nursing diploma. I have been qualified 9 years and have worked at Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool for 9 years. I am concerned that I may not get a job having only done a diploma and not a degree. Any advise would be appreciated.

hi There

At the moment Alberta don't insist on a degree there are a few nurses on here heading away in the near future to Alberta. I;m not sure how many have degrees but I'm sure its not all of them.

My OH is a nurse and we are waiting for CARNA to respond to her assesment of suitability to practice. We have been told that some project 2000 nurses may not have enough Obs or Psych experience or training but that shouldnt be an issue for you ( it might be for us)

best I can suggest is go to the CARNA website and check their requirements for International applicants. I would get an application of to them and they will tell you if you would be approved for temporary licence. It takes a while we are currently at 6 weeks and counting.

Cheers
Tom

Recommend checking out some of the agencies that can assist with all of this as well. GenevaHealth is a regular in the Nursing Times/Standard. We are using them and it gives that extra piece of mind that they are getting paid to get me there so they try and look after you better

Hi Joinermike

I have a job secured in Alberta. I also have a Nursing Diploma from Project 2000 (qualified 1997) and not a Degree and haven't had any problems. Originally had a job secured with Capital Health through Geneva Health but when we visited Edmonton we didn't really like it as a place for us to live. Geneva Health as already mentioned were very helpful but didn't really deal with Calgary when we were looking. We loved the Calgary and Red Deer areas though so I just contacted the Health Region directly and they offered me a job.

I hope that helps, you are welcome to PM us if we can help at all.

Julie

Hi,
I have recently been in touch with CARN ALBERTA, hoping to work in Calgary. I am diploma trained nurse specializing in Theatre work.
www.nurses.ab.ca They have the relevant forms to download for your application. Part of which you need to send one of the forms to the NMC to verify your qualifications. They send direct to Alberta. Cost £34.00.
CARN will contact you regarding if any more info is required or if satisfied you then have to sit their aassessment Evidence of Competence. covers generalized nursing knowledge in the areas of medical surgical nursing. As you are paediatric trained i presume you would have to also take the focused assessments in your given speciality. Possibly over 3 days in total. Been advised to contact the local region for job possibilities. As others have stated, their are agencies who will guide you through getting work on a temporary visa. In the mean time do apply for your permanent visa, this takes many years to process! Good Luck Elaine

Alberta Nurses highest paid in Canada, you do not need a degree, some very good hospitals to work at.

Major Shortage of Nurses, My Wife is an O.R Nurse, would like to work a day a week, sometimes she is called daily and She has to say No.

$80,000 year easily Attainable with shifts and Overtime, Full Pension after 35 years, about 60% of Full Time Earnings.

Hi there, I've been to Calgary and I have a Diploma and all being well with the Canadian Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) then I will get a temp licence (therefore Temp Work Permit) issued and can work in Calgary.

We were in Calgary in November and looked at houses and I met up with someone at Calgary Health about jobs, etc. I was given this contact via Boxerdog who will be going in a couple of weeks. If you want the contact let me know and I'll PM you.

Im and Adult trained nurse, so don't know about you being specifically child trained, etc. but again you could (would really need to) email the Calgary Health contact and ask. As well as going to CARNA webby and finding out what their requirements are also.

You certainly don't have to have a Degree to work in Alberta.

HTH
