Default Nurse wanting to go to Canada

Hi

Is there any nurses out there from the UK or NZ who have moved to Canada, if so was it easy did you have to pass exams etc.

I am a UK citizen living in New Zealand with my dual citizenship kiwi/UK partner. We would like to move to Vancouver in 6 months time, Im a nurse and he is a paramedic/health promoter, he has a masters degree in public health. What is the process like in seeking a work permits,

Im fed up in New Zealand been here for 15 months now and not feeling any better about the place. The fella wants to work in another country for a couple of years to get experience, Oz is too close too similar, USA is insane (for example President Bush) and I come from England, so we thought Canada would be kewl.

Hi Sugo,

I don't know anything about the nursing thing but i am sure you will find lots that can help. Your post just interested me as you say your fed up with New Zealand after 15 months. Just wondered why that was.
Read a lot on here from people not satisfied with Canada and it always seems to start a real debate between those for it and those against it so would be interested in you reasons for not liking NZ.

Well here goes,

Not much work here for nurses, Im an emergency dept nurse, in wellington there are only 2 emergency depts, both have crappy reps, Nursing here is really behind compaired to other countries, still very much the doctors handmaiden, had one doctor ask me to gt him coffee and sandwiches last week.

Then there is the average kiwi, most are friendly nice people. But the place that i work in is scarily populated with utter *****wits, racists and religous fanatics. These are health professionals.

Then there is the bullying that is rife in NZ. Not just the school ground but at work. New staff are welcomed to the dept with a period of hazing where they are shown exactly where in the pecking order they belong. There is loads of back biting, bitching, and sillyness. There are lots of staff who run to the managers for silly things that they should deal with themselves. Apparently people have researched the high rates of bullying in NZ.

Expensive travel, costs a bomb to fly anywhere internal or external. Poor public transport, cold houses, the rain, the wind,

Had a fellow *****wit nurse say to me that i must be enjoying it here cos im the first pom she hasnt heard whinge yet. There is an underlying dislike of immigrants here, even though we come here bringing our experience and training, you should see how many people ask how long im going to be here for and where im from, and they say that UK is awful and the weather here is better. Ive never seen so much rain and been so cold.

Yeah canada is frazing in the winter, but homes are warmer, and they have proper seasons, i just hope canadians are more forward thinking and less simple than the kiwis i have come across.

Wow, think i'm glad i didn't choose NZ.
It seems odd that bullying is so rife over there. I know it is often the subject of much discussion in the UK and it has certainly been vastly improved since i was at school and started work. We had a work experience pupil come to our works for 2 weeks as part of their last year in school and i've never seen so much paper work and information just for 1 kid, there was a huge list of do's and don'ts and rules and regs, health and safety, what you couldn't say to them what they weren't allowed to do etc.
And as for tea and coffee i cannot remember the last time one of our office girls made tea, its every man for himself and if you asked you would probably end up wearing the teapot.

lol

its part of the culture here, there all trying to be the top dog, even if that means dumping on those around them, see it at work all the time, people will be best bud with each other but once they get a sniff of promotion they would sell their own mothers to get one over. When they do get to the top they act like a dork. Other irritating thing in nursing here is the badge fraternity. You see nurses with 15-20 badges on the uniform like they are wearing military medals, because i dont have a nursing medal being a UK nurse some nurses dont speak to me when i take patients to the wards in case im am one of those un trained type who they only speak to when they send them down to the coffee shop. You see these poor health care assistants spending their tea break in the que buying coffee for the nurses, you never see the staff nurses down there.

Kiwis certainly know how to blow there own trumpets too

Hi Sugo,
I am an RN working in acute psychiatry in downtown Vancouver.
We work closely with emergency and it is always busy.
To retain staff, the management from time to time arranges
inservices regarding 'respect in the work place' .
Oh yeah we do have our share of heated moments among the staff.
In end we usually resolve the issues by having meetings for people
to vent their feelings.
I find the racists feeling come more from the patients than
from the medical team. We have zero tolence for violence
and we have good security back up for emergencies .
We have inservices for self protection and how to confront
obnoxious people.

Do send in your nursing education credentials to the provincial nursing asssociation of your choice for assessment to sit for the CRNE .
Always shortage of nurses Canada wide, with your emerg experience,
I do not think it would be difficult to find a job. Hope that helps, Yoong

Hi Sugo

I am not in the nursing profession so cant help you re the job hunting.

Just have to say how terrible i feel for you there in NZ if the kiwi's are as u portray them.

Thought I would try to reassure you about the Canadians tho. I have been going to Canada for around 17 years visiting family and friends and have to say they have to one of the friendliest and rspectful people I have ever met.

Also they LOVE the Brits accent and from what I have seen it seems to immediately make them want to put you at ease - although they may want to know the ins and outs of what is happening in Coronation Street lol

I certainly agree with burton bunch, we had nothing but praise for the people we met whilst out there and in a strange twist several people asked if we were from NZ when they heard us speak.
I even remember one girl in a coffee shop saying "are you guys from England" we said yes, she said "do you know the Beatles"
Still makes me smile when i think of it.

Hi Sugo
It does seem a well documented route on a WP or PNP for Nurses although there are some exams, I suggest you get some contacts from the following for info.

We get asked so many times if we are Australian. I think, if you don't have what they know as a 'typically British accent", by that I mean, sound like Prince Charles or Alf Garnet !!!, then they get all confused.

I totally agree about the niceness of the people here. friendly, unassuming, respectful people (on the whole. Always exceptions of course)

Greetings!

I am a nurse (of sorts) heading to Vancouver. I can assure you that if you want to get a work permit in Canada then being a nurse is a major plus. Start with the College of Registred Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC) - www.crnbc.ca - and start your application to become an RN in BC rolling. You obviously can't work as a nurse until you register. You will then have to take the Canadian Registed Nurse Exam (CRNE) once you land in Canada. I am due to take this next year, so can't tell you how difficult it is. However, if you were educated as a nurse in the UK, I am sure it will be like shelling peas ;o)
Hope that helps. Good luck!!
