No wonder this country is going to the dogs with tax rates that high. When I lived in Oregon there was no sales tax, which was bloody good because when HID bought an arctic fox fur coat it would have cost us a small a fortune in tax.

the bit that amuses me, which has been glossed over in the press, is the tax break for high earners, agreed there is an increase in high earner tax over $150,000 but the ceiling has been moved from 17.5% for those that earn over85,000 to those that earn over $95,000.

Am I the only cynical one that thinks this may have something to do with the average MLA earning $86619, funny how they give themselves an income tax break while screwing most other folk. As their dodgy expenses are no longer allowed I suppose they must recoup their money.

I think your right! They are desperate for people to come to NS yet they do all they can to tax people to within an inch of their life. How is this beneficial to anyone, long term?

NS will be a ghost (Province) town in 10 years time.

2% on HST (compared to NL for example) is hardly 'taxing people to within an inch of their life' is it?

But what do we get for it? I see no benefit staying in NS.

I see no benefit in moving to NS, unless the Community Stream (or whatever it is called) is the only way one can get into Canada

Why is everyone so surprised. NDP Premier of the age old 'Tax & Spend' mentality....acting true to form....Perhaps one day Politicians will learn to spend only what the Province can afford....Simples innit!

OK, lets put this another way: Would paying 2% more HST, on it's own, be enough to drive you from NS? I know you are thinking of leaving, but not just because of the HST increase right?!

absolutely not, 2% only adds up to about an extra $500 per year each, however when added to the highest income tax rates in canada, the highest corporate tax rates in canada, as well as a proposed 40% hike in water rates and a further proposed 12% rise in power rates, alongside some of the highest gas prices in canada, and some of the highest percentile city taxes in Halifax, as well as having one of the lowest rates of average salary in the country, things are not pretty.

All that said, every morning when I look out of my window, I would not be anywhere else on earth!!

Come to Newfoundland. 13% HST, lowest personal taxation rates in Atlantic Canada.
