Question Novice seeks advice on working in Canada

Hi Folks, this is my first post in here so I'm a newbie lol. Hope this isn't too long for you but I thought this was a good site to seek advice.

I'm 45 years old and I'm looking at moving from England to Canada in search of work for about 12 months and perhaps living over there permanently depending on various circumstances (such as finding work lol). I work for Toshiba delivering and installing large photo copiers, I've only done this for 3 months and its not really a skilled job. I was previously a supervisor for a wood turning company but the company closed down in May of this year. While being out of work between jobs I passed an LGV Class 2 driving course ( Previously known as HGV 2 Heavy Goods Vehicles), this entitles me to drive rigid wagons but alas I am struggling to find work here because I lack experience and the haulage companies get their insurance cheaper for experienced drivers.

I have heard that there are opportunities for drivers in places like the Yukon or in similar areas where there are Oil companies and the like. My brother was in Canada in October and while on vacation he met people who basically turned up looking for work and he learned that many of the large companies were crying out for drivers.

I appreciate my age and a lack of experience may count against me but I'm looking for any advise at all that may help me. I'm a complete novice on things like visa's etc and regulations so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to any helpful replies and wish you all a Happy New Year.

Regards Steve

Steve, companies are looking for drivers. You may want to consult one of the provincial or territorial websites in particular the Ministry of Transportation, to determine the various classes of license.

I am told Alberta is also desperate for truckers. Your woodworking skills could prove equally or even more desirable also!

Good luck
