Hi,
First post here...I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of what the IT management situation is in NS or Newfoundland. I have 17 years experience in IT the last 7 being in IT management (the previous 10 as Project Manager/Analyst Programmer) leading teams of developers, IT support, DTP, Web services, networks, ERP systems, etc. I have no formal IT qualifications but hold a very senior management position.
Any pointers as to the best areas and/or recruitment companies in these two locations would be very useful indeed...
Have posted this in the "IT" employment forum as well. Hope that hasn't broken any rules, apologies if so.
Thanks,
Mark

I see from posts here that there is some computing in NS, NB and BC but the great concentrations of computer jobs are in the GTA, Ottawa and Quebec.

Thanks for the replies guys....I've not really looked into Ottawa and Quebec (Where's GTA?), maybe I should.
Thanks for the Craigs list tip, I'll give it a go

Oh also one last tip that I have found. They seem to be unwilling to interview people who arent actually in Canada from my experience. As i've said elsewhere i'm an ex Microsoft developer for 2 years and then 4 years in a tier 1 bank and havent even had a call back from the smallest of software houses in Vancouver.

Try http://www.infotechsolutions.com/ - I understand they are a reasonable-sized outfit based in Newfoundland.

'Yis 'by, A computer eh? Sure we's has them 'tings here. And running water & inside washrooms. You'd be amazed!'
For the OP. Check out www.careerbeacon.com and look for jobs in NL. I've recently seen IT type positions advertised by Xwave, Memorial University and Deloitte (for ERP implementations in Higher Education.). There is unlikely to be the level of opportunity in Toronto but it would not be impossible to find a job either if you had the right experience/luck/drive/willingness to accept a 'provincial' salary.

Once again thanks for all the useful replies, I shall be sure to take your suggestions on board.
I am not looking to earn a fortune, just enough to get by in an area of natural beauty with a more relaxed way of life...I'm nearly 40 so looking to make a difference within a smaller company rather than better my career...

I once wrote a program in Grand Falls, in a waiting room in the hospital. I used a laptop and a dial up line to a remote server so, for that brief moment, I know there was one machine in the province. Nonetheless, it's as unlikely a place to find a computing job as just about anywhere.

Still, highspeed internet is available pretty widely these days. Even in a wilderness hunting cabin in the middle of nowhere near Gros Morne where we used satellite internet to communication using a VOIP phone whilst snowmobiling last winter.
