nova scotia - anyone working as a chef?
Hi:-)Hi
My husband and I are thinking about moving to nova scotia under the pnp scheme. He is a chef in the UK with 14 years experience and I work in immigration. Obviously we will have to visit the area first but I just thought I'd ask if anyone got accepted as a chef?
We really don't know where to start so any useful info would be very much welcomed. Many thanks.

Hi, and welcome to BE.
Which PNP stream are you looking at?
Good luck with it.

I know nothing about the immigration process but I recommend trying the Canadian Legion halls in central NS.

Hi, admittedly we know very little about how to emigrate to Canada. My husband loves the look of nova scotia so our plan is to visit Halifax first then find out if that makes sense? We're trying to find out if it is possible at all with his current occupation or should he re train etc

Is he any good as a chef? I ask because when I've been in Nova Scotia I thought the restaurant food sucked (apart from seafood, which anyone can cook).

Hi novocastrian,
He's pretty good yes :-) is it really that bad over there? It's gotta be better than chain restaurants here at least?

It's wrong to say restaurant food is crap here- it's not. There are crap restaurants for sure, but I suspect NS isnt alone in having dodgy restaurants.
Typically, good chefs are hard to come by as most head to Toronto/Vancouver, but I would suspect there are plenty of opportunities here.
All the best.

We're from Manchester originally, and moved to NS last year.

It seems Red Seal "Cook" is required to practice as a Chef in all Provinces, though it is possible to challenge the requirements if you have prior experience.

For Nova Scotia:
Certificate through trade qualification
6 For the purpose of Section 30 of the General Regulations, which authorizes the Director to issue a certificate of qualification in a designated trade to a person who does not hold a certificate of apprenticeship in the trade if the person applies and meets certain requirements, 9000 hours is prescribed as the period of employment required for the cook trade.

No idea about NS but I wish we had some decent chefs around here. There are plenty in Peterborough but outside the city all we get is diner food. Burgers, fries, sandwiches, wings, greek salad, chef's salad, caesar salad. Crying out for a gastro pub!
There's a cafe for sale in the village, anyone interested?
