A reasonably well maintained well and septic (cost here is minimal) should outlive the occupant.
25 years for a septic system, I don't think there's an average life for wells. If you don't intend to own the place for more than 25 years then it's a gamble, zero dollars if the septic doesn't break, $20,000 if it does. Say $300 every five years for pumping.

What does municipal sewage cost? $25/month maybe? If so, and if $20,000 is a fair estimate, then if the septic goes for more than 17 years or so without incident you're winning. If it doesn't then a connected bog is a better deal.

The point is moot, of course, if you're in the country you don't have access to a sewer and, if there is a sewer, you can't use a septic system.

Petrol £55-65 (100) petrol here $48-55 per week bigger car here but mostly hyw miles
Electric £65 (110) here $180 bimonthly but bigger house.
Heating oil seems similar but no figures as always fill tank when empty.
I can eat out here for around $50 per person although in UK pubs it would be much cheeper and wine and beer here are much more expensive.
So in summary it is all very subjective. in my OPINION in NS it is nearer to UK wage multiplied by 1.25 than 1.7
Enjoyed the debate though! Happy new year
How about comparing dental costs, or other medical costs, cell phones, bank charges, etc. Me thinks you have been very selective with what you have put forward.

I wasn't being selective I use a pay as U go mobile which is not as posh as my UK version but costs about the same. I paid medical and dental in UK and they were a comparable price to my plan here.I am sure there are a million things we could check and debate but as I said it is what you choose to spend your dollars on. Oh as for bank charges I paid £14 per month with lloyds and didn't use and of the free stuff and pay $13.50 with RBC and still don't use any of the free stuff.

I am a native Nova Scotian, so I have nothing to compare to in the UK. Friends/clients of mine landed here last year and both work in the healthcare field. One had a job prior to landing and the other shortly after. They have said that some things are more expensive here, and others cheaper. Their home is bigger than what they had, at a subatantially lower cost, and they have much more land. They feel they are ahead of the game financially, but their man reason to relocate was the lifestyle offered here for them and their three children, which they have found. Although expenses are to be considered, there may be other factors to take into consideration.

I value your quote. I do know there is much to consider finances and lifestyle, both very important. If I make the move will probably rent first so that I can have a good look around and get a feel for life in NS.
