Have a look at the Wiki (on blue bar at top of page) to figure out which visa you'd be eligible for - this page is a good place to start. http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Quick_...an_Immigration
Once you've had a good read and understood the basics, then shout with any questtions.

Possibly, but read the Wiki or the CIC website (www.cic.gc.ca) and you'll soon figure out if you are eligible for any visa without a job offer.

I'm no expert so hopefully somebody will be along to clarify

But he doesn't have a job offer from Canada ? As far as I can tell, he is planning on sticking with his 'international' job and it is not clear from his posts how this fits with the immigration criteria.

If you meet the criteria of NOC code 8222 (as you've said above) then you DON'T require a job offer as you would be eligible as a Skilled Worker (category 1).
Do check that you definitely meet the criteria though - firstly, that you do at least half of the 'main duties' listed under that NOC code (and would be able to prove it), secondly, that you get at least 67 points on the self assessment test, and thirdly that you have the required proof of funds.
If you can say yes to all of the above, then you can apply now (do it asap as there is a quota of 1000 applications per NOC code, and once that quota is reached no further applications will be taken) and wouldn't need a job offer to do so. You and your dependent family members would get Permanent Residency and be able to live anywhere you like in Canada. You can also retire, work, study, set up your own business etc - just because you are applying under 8222 doesn't mean you have to stay working in that job when you get there.
Hope that helps, have a read of the downloadable guide from the CIC website as well to understand how you can apply.
Good luck.
