Default No work shortage here Manitoba gained 800 jobs in July

Nationally, the job boom went bust in July, with the loss of 55,000 jobs.

But in Manitoba there were 800 more people employed in July compared to June and the job count has grown by 2.5 per cent over the past 12 months, almost twice the national rate of 1.3 per cent.

There are (more than) 800 people in Manitoba? Who knew?

If you left upside-down land once in a while you could find out all sorts of wild and wonderful things.

No wait, you know all the wild things....

Let's see, err, 800 people multiplied by a job growth of 2.5%. There, that will tell you the current population of Manitoba.

I should laugh, I live in McGinty's Ontario where jobs are evaporating.

This is hardly surprising seeing as Manitoba has the second strongest economy in the nation at the moment.

Hi Steve, many of the western economies are resource driven. Given the recent fall in price of oil and other resources, how do you think this will affect the future?

I doubt that the current falls will make much difference; Alberta was already booming with oil at $80 a barrel, for example. But if commodity prices really crash, it certainly will hit the West hard.

I agree with the above.

I think at the moment a step back from the pace of the last year or so in Alberta would be a very good thing.

Demand for oil in the long term is only going to go up and Alberta has a lot of it. Slowing down the pace of development of the Athabasca tar sands can only be a good thing in my mind.
