Re: No work in Ontario ? myth or fact
I for one think (and I know it wont be popular on an immigration website.) the federal government should make re-training and education more accessible to the unemployed, and re-train currently unemployed Canadians before opening the doors to temp. workers from other countries.
I know more then one person, myself included who simply can't afford school who would gladly go to school and gain a skill if the access was there.
EI is a waste of a program, they make it so hard to get, that many who end up unemployed end up on provincial welfare (at far less money then EI would pay) because EI found one way or another not to approve a claim.

Sounds about right for that area, and I dont think there is much difference in other area's surrounding Peterborough.

Re: No work in Ontario ? myth or fact
Alberta always refers to Ontario and eastward as "out East".

People from Ontario may say they're from "back east", but unless they're originally down homers they won't claim to be from down east.

"Down east" is the Atlantic provinces. If you're meeting people who live in Ontario saying they're from "down east" then it's most likely they're originally from NB, NS, PEI or NFLD but living in Ontario.

No work in Ontario..... has to be a myth like others have said it depends what type of work. There are schools, hospitals, police, local government, shops, retail..... etc
Also just to clarify........ Vancouver is in the east ... Eastern Pacific that is
The phrase I have heard most to describe this eastern seaboard of Canada where I live is 'The Maritimes' I have heard Atlantic Canada used but not as much.......and having had this conversation many times with people at work........'out West' nearly always refers to Alberta and never BC..... certainly nowhere this side of Alberta.... Down East is a phrase used most commonly in Maine as far as I know

My 19 year old son is looking for a job in Toronto...any job... and so far has been unlucky! He's been there since just before Christmas as so far no interest...
I'm getting worried the money is going to run out and then he'll have to go further East!!
But seriously if anybody knows anybody who can pull strings and help him get a job, any job, I would be so relieved. He doesn't have much experience, he worked in a chip shop for 2 years in the UK and also in Wilkinsons so he would only we looking for unskilled minimum wage stuff...

Wow, I bet the OP is regretting posting the question. If you listen very hard you can hear her saying "nevermind"....way out west.

Manufacturing has taken a huge hit in Ontario over the last maybe 5 years. The province is running a defecit and public sector jobs will be hit due to that too. At the same time the oil patch has boomed, so its understandable that people have migrated to where the good paying jobs are out west.
Obviously if you talk to people in Alberta who moved from Ontario they will tell you there are "no jobs"... they moved for work presumably.
Meanwhile the rest of us tied to our desks in Ontario can confirm that there clearly is some work in Ontario My company hires new engineers and technicians fairly frequently, and people move on to other jobs so the market is not entirely dead.

6 of my colleagues have moved to GTA from NS in the last 1.5 years. They are all immigrants by the way.
