at first we were thinking about calgary as ive spent a lot of time there but we are really interested in saskatchewan now and want to be relatively close to saskatoon(hopefully no more than about 40 miles)we did look into humboldt but think its a bit too much of an old people town and we have three kids.hopefully itll be beyond the suburbs a bit,not quite in the sticks but close enough to a quite modern town with malls, cinemas etc.has anyone any ideas i can research, towns etc

Whats wrong with saskatoon? populations only 200k so it hardly ranks as a big place. Bear in mind that in the winter driving 20 miles to get to the mall could be challenging! (or even just a PITA)
btw ive never been to saskatoon or any of the small towns around it, but I have seen a lot of small towns in manitoba and I'm not sure I would take 3 kids to live in any of them.
A lot of these canadian cities in the prairies stop very abruptly, not like in the UK where one place peters out and the next one starts so quite often there will be miles (10's of) between houses. Its a level of sparseness that nothing in europe can prepare you for.
The city limit you see on the map is the whole place not the city centre.
