Newspapers

I try to have a look at a couple of Canadian newspapers online every day. I seem to have got into the habit of reading The Star & The Toronto Sun as they are both in my bookmarks and also as they focus on Toronto/GTA which is my main interest I suppose.
Can anyone recommend any other online newpapers? Something that is not tabloid tat though. I ask as I would never in a hundred years dream of reading the UK version of the Sun, and the Toronto one seems scarily similar in branding & style.

You could try the Globe and Mail.

Don't bother reading world news in any of the Canadian media.

In Vancouver the Sun is the highbrow (well, more middlebrow really) paper and The Province has the mindless tat.

Oh you mean that tiny section, mentions Afghanistan occasionally? I noticed it's fairly skimpy.

Put it this way. At 6pm, CBC Newsworld carries the world news from...the BBC.

Ah, the all encompassing news provider that they are.

The Globe and Mail has some interesting takes on overseas stories - often reporting what the UK press won't say.... well that's my opinion.

Other Newspapers are: nationalpost, Montreal Gazette (probably not interesting for you), canadianbusiness (a Rogers publication - least said about Rogers the better at the moment)

If you really want to get a cross section of news and views, it's best to read a wide variety. Here is a website that has links to newspapers around the world.

When I was into this, I used to rotate amongst them, reading one from Western Europe, one from the Former Soviet Union, one from the Middle East, one from Far East Asia, one from Latin America, one from Australasia, and so on.

I would say it's best to read a broad cross section or else read none at all. I think the worst thing is to read only one.

Just my opinion.

Do you have an example?

I think the Toronto Sun defines the lameness of the Canadian media. I assume the page to which you refer is the Sunshine Boy, a daily pin up of a slightly, but not overtly, gay looking guy, something like the fellow in your avatar picture. I think this is lame compared to the actual Sun because, firstly the real Sun wouldn't feel the need to appease the homosexual population and, secondly, if it did it would have nude, not coy, pictures.
