I was wondering the same thing. Where I live almost every other person you meet seems to be from Newfoundland and they all say they would love to go back but there's no work there.
Well that's what I did anyway :D |

Hating living in Halifax as much as I do, I didn't have high hopes of enjoying our trip to St John's. OMG - we've only been here a few hours but what a fantastic place. Almost didn't make it as flight was apparently close to being returned to Halifax due to fog, but thank goodness we did. Just got back from having supper at a great place in Water Street, had cod's tongues and scrunchings followed by partridge berry pud - the shops, the restaurants, the bars, all look great and I'm amazed at how much choice there is. Can't wait to see more of the place tomorrow.

Glad to hear that you are enjoying your trip! We think there is definitely something special about Newfoundland.
Just give us a shout if you want any more info - glad to help. unfortunately it was a short trip - at the airport now waiting for flight back to Halifax. Had the most amazing time. Definitely want to come back and stay longer. Weather has been fantastic, which I suppose always helps. Would we have felt the same way if we'd had fog and rain? I think so. I am amazed by St John's - how much there is to see and do. I realise how ignorant I was about the place before visiting. The people are so friendly and the facilities we saw at the university and hospital this afternoon put Halifax to shame (sorry can only compare those 2 places). The local people are so friendly and helpful, and the food we've had has been fantastic (yes, even the cod's tongues:rofl:) We went to a screech in at O'Reilley's in Georges Street last night, the live music was great. I am surprised more BE members haven't looked at Nfdl as a way into Canada. There appears to be a real shortage of skilled workers here, everyone we spoke to said it's almost impossible to get an electrician/plumber/builder. There is just such a great atmosphere everywhere. Can see why you guys love living there - I really am very envious. As far as I'm concerned, the Rock rocks:rofl: |

That's very recent though, there are very many Newfie electricians/pumbers/builders here because, for the longest time, there was no work there.
All the Newfies were leaving because there were no jobs and very low wages ..... now wages are going up and there are not enough jobs? What happened? Did somebody strike oil, or find a new kind of fish to catch maybe? |

The Newfs I know here lack confidence in the boom, they're not rushing back yet. |

House prices have already started to rise, and plots of land are apparently hard to find. We saw lots of construction being done on roads, houses etc. The place seemed to have a real buzz about it - and I don't think it was just the Guiness:rofl: |

Or something like that. Right now though, they are building infrastructure to sustain the oil folks living here, so it's on the up and will be for many many years. |
Re: Newfoundland......Just interested.
I spent a week in St John's in 2004 and loved every minute of it.... It was in August and the weather was surprisingly warm. I thought there was loads to do and see and with my better half coming from Ireland she was in her element. Live music at night superb as was the attitude of the locals to us.... unfortunately I didn't get the job at that time although they did come back to me two years later when other things had happened so didn't progress the opportunity.
Off to Halifax NS for a couple of years in November..... we go there every year for a week or so and have been lucky enough to land a position on another oil related project..... excited and nervous all at the same time!! I must say based on my limited time in St Johns that there were a lot of similarities between there and Halifax. In both places it seems that they have a lot to offer and we love the wide range of places to eat out in Halifax.... we are both mad on 'seafood'. In other parts of the forum there is a lot of talk about the differences between NS and the UK.... everywhere has their good and bad points but there does seem to be less bad behavior on the streets at night in Halifax compared to the UK. The 'busker' fair was on in August with a lot of young people attending.... well organised and well policed so we didn't see any trouble or feel threatened once. When we were in St John's we were out until the early hours nearly every night and felt very safe there too.... So on my limited experience St John's looked a great place to be. Its a shame that us lot in the UK are so obsessed with safety on the streets.... I wonder what that is saying? |
