Newfoundland......Just interested.
Hi all, I am just interested to hear if there are any folks on here, still in the UK, planning to come and relocate to Newfoundland.
Not looking for any saucy replies please, but it seems everyone wants to move everywhere but. Newfoundland, is still Canada's best kept secret. Just interested that's all. Cheers Chris. |

erm... was that saucy? how are you doing over there? Us, doing brilliant, all settled and in a routing, kids loving school and the new lifestyle. And for us, could not be better, booming economy, house prices rocketing, to many jobs not enough people. Folks maybe think Newf is still a republic! |

We are visiting for the first time next week, really looking forward to it, although will be based in St John's and wont get much time to do any sightseeing. Our neighbour here in Halifax is a Newfie, so have heard lots of stories of what life is like there. Have you watched the movie - The Shipping News? Someone suggested we watch it to get an idea of what life was like there - OMG I hope it's not like that:rofl: |

I watched that the day it came out. In them days I lived with a Newfie and we saw it a packed cinema in Scarborough (huge newf population there). There was rarely a dry eye in the place and the love scene for which the heroine wears a thick flannelette nightie brought on great sighs of nostalgia. That and the step ladder in the bedroom.

I've read the book but haven't seen the film. Does it include the frozen cod incident?

Re: Newfoundland......Just interested.
There's a trailer on the BBC at the moment for a book club interview with Annie Proulx in which she says "I wish I'd never written the story". I know it's the hook but I'm tempted to listen to find out which made her life worse, the interminable eventless tale of the east coast or the one about the gay cowboys.

I'd be tempted to observe that 'The Shipping News' is hardly an accurate representation of life in the St John's area of Newfoundland these days. Not sure about Outport life though. For info, the inexecrable 'Hatchning, Matching & Dispatching' is also not a reasonable or accurate representation of life here.

LOL.....no not seen that program, but I am blown away as to how fast things are changing in front of our eyes.
I got here in February and there are housing sub-divisions sprouting up all over the place, it's amazing, it's really really difficult to get anyone to do work for you, as they are all flat out with work with the booming economy. It's absolutely NOT slowing down either, I work in the advertising magazine industrey here and we are getting ad after ad from companies wanting folks to return to Newfoundland. I read a Canadian study recently, on salaries per big Canadian City and St John's was in the top 5. Amazing. And then there is the country side! Well, I should get a job at the Newfoundland and Labrador tourist board!! Anywho, I hope you enjoy your visit here. |

To add to Chris's last post...
The employment market is absolutely crazy here at present. I imagine a bit like Calgary/Edmonton/Fort Mc is/was. Recruitment at all levels from unskilled to professional is proving a challenge. Is it sustainable? Who knows but the amount of natural resources related work here for the next decade or more would seem to indicate yes. The big problem is those businesses (like the one I work in) that are outside the Oil & Gas sector but are affected by it nevertheless. Any Buyers/Quality/Production Engineers out there wanting a job? ;) |
