Default Newfoundland

Anyone been there before?

Housing is appears to be a heck of a lot cheaper then here.

How about other things? Does the lower housing savings get eaten by paying more for other everyday things like food, electric, taxes etc?

It's way too far at the moment to make a visit to, been looking online a bit, and doesn't seem any worse then typical sized city's in BC are, but hard to tell from just reading things on the internet.

One downside is distance, it's one hell of a long ways from the west coast of North America..

Didn't you see my earlier post suggesting you find a scientist to reverse the coasts for you?

Well yes, but you know that already presumably.

There has been dramatic housing price inflation over the past decade driven by the buoyant Oil driven economy in St John's. Not a patch on Vancouver of course but still more expensive than say Nova Scotia. Check out Kijijji or nlclassfieds.com for rents but you'll spend $1000 or so for a 2 bed appartment imho

To an extent yes. Examples are 2L of mile for $4. Veg and fruit can be expensive. Little is grown locally so it all comes a long way. Gas is currently around $1.04 a litre. Electric will go up dramatically in 2018 when the ill judged and worse managed Muskrat Falls hydro project comes on line. Taxes - Provincial ones - are low. HST is 13% going up to 15% soon. Travel off the island can be expensive. You can't just drive to the US! Its 12 hours across the Island, an expensive ferry ride and then you are still only in Cape Breton

Per your post on the University thread, the move would be about cheap tuition available at MUN/CONA? You have to research and do the math to see whether the costs of living & relocation costs make the lower tuition worthwhile.

Thanks. I tried using some of the online calculators for cost of living comparison but the ones I found had little useful info.

Well gas is cheaper based on that price. Paid 1.15 today.

We do have cheap hydro though.

We dont have HST but for those items taxable for both gst and hst I think is 12%. Most of our purchases are not taxable kind so no large amounts.

Its a research project. Need a place with reasonable housing costs, access to education easily.

BC has good education options but lacks the affordable housing in a reasonable sized city so you can access it.

Right now the closest school is 1 hour away with the one with the program of interest 90 mins to 2 hours.

AB, SK, MB, QC are not appealing so doesnt leave much left. Lol

Hi I could find Moncton on Numbeo, but not anywhere in Newfoundland (but didn't know many places to try). Vancouver is, of course, there:

Cost of Living Comparison Between Moncton, Canada And Vancouver, Canada

do you use this site?

Not in Newfoundland.

I reckon they could do very well here, to be honest, purely on monetary terms. There's a high vacancy rate and low rents too as will be seen on kijiji which is the best rental site for Moncton.

Even without the disability money or less of it they may do well if they don't mind the snow and not being close to West Coast USA.

But if Newfoundland is a serious consideration then, yes, why not NB.

If I wasn't expecting to be selling after winter I'd be actively recruiting Js. But I'm sure there are loads of places here that would work for them.

Our Zoo is good for a city this size but not what Js is used to and there's no aquarium. But maybe the cheaper living available would give spare money to pay to visit places.

New Brunswick is on the possible list. This will be a work in progress so still lots of planning and research.

It's about 50/50 when comparing Squamish to Vancouver, some of the numbers though are so far off I would say they were just made up.
