Default newbie to forum

hi, i'm new to the forum. just wanted to say hello. my husband and i have got the 'lets move to canada bug' so i have been reading up on stuff for a while now. we are still in the decision making stages, if and when we are ready to make the move, we hope to go as skilled workers. the OH is an accountant and i am a trainee social worker, we are educated to degree level and have enough funds to move to canada and have a mortgage free life. my only real concern is around job prospects once we get there.

have any social workers with the new social work BA hons qualification gone to canada recently, if so, have you been able to find work with your qualification or have you had to do some sort of conversion.

kind regrads

Hi there - and welcome

I would have thought that they are crying out for social workers here - there are many kids in foster care unfortunately. Don't know about accountants - but I would have thought that he will need to update his credentials here to understand Canadian business rules etc - but I'm only guessing on this one!

Check out the lists of required jobs on the skilled worker route as a starting point - if you're needed - you'll be listed. There's also a link on the home page at the moment on the CIC website about a new process for checking credentials that may give you some info.

Welcome again

hi ladymoose

thanks for the advice. You are right there is a shortage of social workers in this country at the moment, think it could a case of the brain drain because of things going a bit downhill in the UK. My brother, who qualified as a barrister in the UK moved to Markham Ontario about 6 years ago with his family, says things are much better over in CA

Will check the things you mentioned. also many thanks for making me feel welcome, how good are you!

on a unrelated note, I've just eaten a largish bag of choc covered peanuts (just had a heated runin with traffic warden:frown) he told me i cant park outside my own house while people are working on our fencing. Canada's looking good right now!

better put the tea on to make up for eating OH's share of the chocs.

kind regards

Hi Teamsal

My hubby is an accountant on a WP in Alberta at the mo - he is ACA (ICAEW) - and got his job whilst we were visiting friends and family last summer and then trawling around all the accountants with his resume.

If he is a Chartered Accountant he will have to sit the reciprocity exam to convert the ICAEW to a Canadian CA as he works in public practice but quite sure that if it is Management Accounting that he is into ie in Industry there isnt anything you really have to do to convert.

Trawl www.workopolis.ca and www.monster.ca and the like for jobs for him you never know your luck - Phil did get replies from some of the adverts on these sites that he applied for alongwith some interviews.

thanks for the info on accountancy qualifications, appreciate it. OH is registered with the ACCA, he said he will look into canadian accountancy quals in more detail. your OH has done really well getting the whole work situ sorted.

This is a really great site, a bit like a combined font of knowledge!

Hi Teamsal,

We have just submitted our application for SW at the start of June. This site is great and we have had lots of useful and friendly responses to our posts. Just one thing, it is very addictive once you get started on here! I find myself logging on in every spare minute just to see who has got some good news and read the amusing stories.

All the Best

If he is a full member of ACCA by examination and has a university degree equivalent to a Canadian bachelors degree (any subject) then he should be eligible to become a Canadian Certified General Accountant (CGA) by mutual recognition.

Except in Quebec, as CGA Quebec have not yet joined the agreement.

The CGA designation obtained by mutual recognition does not give public practice rights, but for those working in industry this is not usually a problem.

Welcome Teamsal to the mad house.

You will become addicted there is no question about this. My husband has threatened to cut the wires off our computer!!!! I have found out tons of onfo from all the kind peeps of BE. Much more than anywhere else - when I want to know something I simply post the question and soon get a reply.

Try www.jobsetc.com as well - you can create a Canadian style resume with them and they match jobs to suit your resume right across Canada.

Definitely try to get a job as the SW route is taking years!
All the best in the job hunt - have you any idea where you would like to settle?
Alison.

hi chaps and chappesses

this forum stuff is addictive, i even tried to have a peek at it on my work computer (the forum that is!). Hubby keeps giving me the evils because i spend so long on the pc, either that or he needs new specks.

anyway, if and when we decide to head for North America we would like to settle in Markham ontario, cos my baby bro lives there. we hope to have made a definite decision within the next 6-8 months. we've got a bit of the old IVF stuff going at the mo, at the end of which we hope know which direction we want life to take us in. we've got c**p timeing cos we've decided we would like to be parents at the grand ages of 38 and 50.

the other things is i will only go if my sun conure parrot (Diego) can come. I love him sooo much, i digress.

i cant get over what a friendly lot you all are, and so knowledgable!

kind regards

Yes we are very knowledgable right enough. Anything from porn names, cooking at high altitudes, sofas that don't fit into basements, slutty bank tellers, crap photos on mls, bad customer service, spelling champions and grammar hogs, to staying in your car when photographing bears and how to deal with car salesmen

We can tell you about anything you want to know, very often your answers will be nothing to do with the question and may often descen into the gutter!!!

But we will try our best. We all have a common bond and it seems to make us all good friends.
so keep posting.

Hi teamsal,

Welcome to the forum. I note that one of you is 50, and if the principal applicant is 50 then I would put the application in now and ponder about it later.

Be aware that you start to lose two points for each year over 49, but once the application is in, then it is frozen at that age for calculating points. I am speaking from experience as I was 50 when I applied and have just received my PPR.

Best of luck
Graeme

Hi Graeme

thanks for that info and the welcome. we looked into the age factor thing and decided that if and when we apply i would be the principle applicant as hubby is the one who is 50. I think thats why we're a bit more relaxed about it. we did the skilled worker assessment on CIC and it gave us 78 points with me as principle applicant. funny thing is I've even considered taking French classes (language not kissing) sorry about my gutter humor!

My bro is a lawyer (immigration) in Canada, i hope to be able to tap into his legal brain should the need arise.

kind regards
