Hi everybody. My name is Simon, my wife and I are taking the plunge and have decided to move to beautiful Canada. We are more than likely looking at the Vancouver area or there abouts. I have heard that there is a good bit of construction work in that area and as I am a general builder hope to be able to get work. We have only just begun the process of relocating and according to the company we are dealing with we will be looking at around a 2 year wait before we get out there. Hopefully we will be heading to Vancouver beginning of Feb 2008 really looking forward to it. If any body wants to chat to me or has got any advice its all appreciated

Hello, Simon.

Welcome to the forum.

Judging from other recent posts, you are not the only person who is heading for Vancouver.

All the best in your quest.

Question Re: New member

One of my main concerns was about electrical equipment but, after browsing I see that most of our appliances would be unuitable for Canada so my wife will be happy to spend out on new stuff (lol).Another thing would be our collection of video cassettes does any one know if I can play them on Canadian Vcr's as we are a bit dumb struck on the whole thing. many thanxs

The TV and videotape standard for the UK is PAL, and the TV and videotape standard for North America is NTSC. It used to be that you could not play a British videotape on a North American VCR and vice versa. However, VCRs that have been manufactured more recently have tended to be able to accommodate both formats.

Hi Simon!

I'm living in Vancouver now, and totally loving it, and I'm sure you will too! There are TONS of construction jobs throughout the area right now, and demand is far exceeding supply. You can just have a quick look around to realise there are new builds going up left right and centre. Construction workers are totally in demand so i'd be very surprised if you had trouble getting work.

Good luck!

Katrina

I'm actually in downtown Vancouver, living in an apartment and not having any kids its ideal! There are lots of nice suburbs around, where you get more house for your money depending on where you go. There's a lot of development going on not only in vancouver, but also the surrounding suburbs, which could be perfect for you finding a job if you end up living a bit out of town.
