Nerves and Excitement
Morning/Evening everyone!
Wondered if anyone else felt the same as I do now. Leaving UK for Canada as PR in 8 weeks time! I have butterflies every day and a mixture of nerves and excitement. I can't wait to start our new life, but feel nervous about saying goodbye to parents and family. I guess this is all a natural part of such a huge move. Any tips Thanks:) |

Re: Nerves and Excitement
Hi
All the best for the move......it is a weird feeling knowing you are moving to another country. I found especially as we were bumping into friends who did not know and it was great to finally talk about it. We had waited years for the PR visa and had not mentoned it. Where are you moving to? What sort of work are you going to be looking for? Cheers JB |
Re: Nerves and Excitement
when I left, I started a diary of events, things like when the movers came, what we did the last few weeks before we left, weather wot was the last TV show I watched etc... described my feelings when we left the UK and how we felt when landing in Canada, even wrote down my panic attacks, very strange, never suffered from them before....but had a few when we came...I updated it every night, I continued it for about 6 months once we got here to Canada....I love to read it now and again, to see how far I have come!!!

Re: Nerves and Excitement
Hi
Thanks for the advice everyone. Just waiting for completion date for house (should be in about 6 weeks) but need to book flight and removal company asap too. We are going to Vancouver. Was a close 2nd for a job in BC Cancer Foundation that would have started last Monday! But my contact there has some other contacts too...so not too worried about getting charity work. Moving with my hubby, so just the two of us to think about. A diary sounds like a good idea. I might try that! I've been seeing a lot of family recently and had a lovely day out today with my Mum and Dad. Maybe that's why I feel up and down sometimes. Juliet C...maybe when you get to Vancouver we could meet up. We have nowhere to live yet. Going to book into a B & B or something for a week or so and start looking for rented apartments. Where will you be living? :D |
Re: Nerves and Excitement
my advice is to get as many friends and family as fully versed with Skype as possible
good luck :-) |
Re: Nerves and Excitement
We are also leaving for Vancouver at the end of June. I know what you mean, you can go from excited to worried to sad all in the same day, (but glad to say more excited than anything). It feels a bit like Christmas Eve when I was a kid and couldn't sleep because I felt sick:rofl:
Starting to get a few "last times" now which seems weird. Last ice hockey match this weekend which is a biggy as we have so many friends there! See you all in Vancouver! |

good luck :-) We also have a UK skype phone number which non-computer relatives can call for the cost of a UK local call. |
Re: Nerves and Excitement
You're in the first two stages of the Kübler-Ross model of emigration. Congratulations and good luck.

Juliet C Hey all. I fly out to Vancouver on Tuesday. I too am swinging from panic attacks to joy! I have the hardest goodbyes this weekend - part of a large family where i am the oldest of 7 kids - the youngest being 10. Not looking forward to it. I remember reading posts like these a year a go thinking what on earth are you worried about! But the reality is so much different. I am staying with a friend while i find somewhere to rent before my husband and the cats arrive 3 weeks later. I am struggling to find somewhere which is worrying me further! If only my husband didn't need a blo*dy garage!! Would love to be part of your meet up in the summer if you work something out. Claire BBUK |
Re: Nerves and Excitement
Hi Claire,
Yes meeting up would be great! And you'll be there before Juliet or me, so you'll have lots of advice for us too. Let me know how your weekend goes. I'm not looking forward to the hardest goodbyes...we leave sometime in May, but they are not forever. It's just until you see them again and I'm going to be on Skype lots too! I'll private message you too. Who are you flying with? We haven't found anywhere to live yet. We are looking at Burnaby at the moment, but going to stay in hotel or B & B for a week or so when we arrive, and then enjoy finding somewhere to live. You will find something. Take care and see you in Vancouver Niki :) |

We use Skype.......it is great. You can get a Skype PC-free phone which connects to broadband via Wifi or LAN. This enables you to have an "always on" skype phone in the house which means family can contact whenever without international call charges.
We also have a UK skype phone number which non-computer relatives can call for the cost of a UK local call. off to canada in august and they are elderly so what is this always on skype phone you refer to . any advice would be great . thank you |

So you parents can call a UK phone number and it will route to your Skype account. If your Skype account is not logged in then you can have voicemail (free if you have subscriptions). This is known as "Skype In" So for example, using Skype In, you have a 0121 XXX XXXX number (there are a few dialing code options). Your parents ring the 0121 number and either your Skype account rings on your PC or it goes to voice mail. The cost of the call to them is the same as ringing any 0121 (Birmingham number). Again there is a limited choice on dialing codes that you choose from when you set this up. Using Skype Out, you can call phone numbers based on your subscription or credit (depending on what you have set up.........subscription is cheaper). If you have a Skype In number then that is the number that appears on Caller ID of the phone you are ringing. If you want an always on Skype phone in your accomodation, then you can either leave your PC on or buy a Skype PC-free phone which connects either by Wifi or Ethernet cable to your broadband router/modem. They are not readily available in shops so you have to use the internet to buy one (Ebay is best). They take about 1 Gbps of data per month so that has to be factored into any usage on internet contracts. If you want more details let me know. JB |

You can also set your Skype In Phone Number to forward to a normal phone. For example: I have a UK Skype In number (we chose one to start 020 as we come from london). If one of the family phone that number it will come through to my computer when I am 'online' with Skype. If i am busy when this happens the call will go to my Skype Voicemail. Skype emails me to say I have a voicemail. When I am 'offline' i have ticked the box in my skype settings to send the call to my mobile phone. I believe it uses some money off my Skype Out Credit. This is very handy! It takes a little while to get used to. But once you know it you will sound like JB and I. BBUK |

Niki :) Hey Niki- looking forward to it. I am flying out with Air Canada at first, and then back for a wedding in June, then a one way with Air Transat (i think!). I always use this travel agent: Southall Travel. They either find the cheapest flight or match the cheapest flight. I found a cheap flight with the right dates on Canada Affair and they put it through for me. Of course you could just go through Canada Affair. It was just easier for me to work with my agent as i had numerous back and forth flights to arrange. I will be staying in Burnaby from Tuesday for a few weeks - i will report back! I am looking for somewhere to rent in Deep Cove, West Vancouver, Kitsilano... but don't know if i will be successful with my budget! If not Burnaby providing i like it. The wiki on here has some links to vacation type rentals for short term renting. http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Rentin...tal_properties Claire |
Re: Nerves and Excitement
Hi Claire,
Thanks for the link and info. I'll have a look later today. Good luck with your family goodbyes. Let me know how you get on. Take care and see you soon :D |

We have on in the house and relatives without a computer use our Skype In number Note - Any Skype phone which connects via USB is a PC dependant phone.....and needs a PC to be on to work. I did forgot to mention call forwarding feature of Skype which BubblebeeUK mentioned. Cheers JB |
