Hi
My husband has a navy pension and is not sure whether to leave it in an English bank account or have it transferred to Canada. Has anyone experienced this problem? Any info would be greatly received.

Getting a credit card in Canada may be a problem initially if there's no credit record.
I carried on using my UK credit card, making payments from my UK bank account. It might be worth keeping an income in a UK account to do the same thing.

This has been mentioend a few times here, you can probably search back through the posts and find more info. In a nutshell, the Canada UK tax treaty states you have to declare the income from foriegn pensions in the country of residence so you will be paying tax on it in Canada anyway. Getting it transferred tax free can be done by contacting the Paymaster General in Crawley.

Yes take the money in the UK pay the bills.
If it a substantial amount and you can afford not to live on it save up 10 15,000 transfer using fedex or similar to avoid costs
If you need it to live on here but don't have a canadian credit card use your uk bank card for food\entertainment and Canadian Cheques for everything else.

You could transfer the pension over to a canadian pension plan and make it work for you. I don't think you will get much through the Uk indexing. If you transfer it over it's normally free and the amount can be invested and I think there may be better terms for dependants here. There are a few companies that deal with this sort of thing. If you want I could put you in touch with one of them.
