Default Navigation in Canada

Hi friends,
I am looking to buy a car from US. Some of cars have navigation system. Will this navigation work in Canada? Do you usualy use navigation in Canada?
Thank you.

As has been stated before a GPS will work anywhere in the world.

What can be an issue is up to date mapping of Canada depending on the system used. Most portable GPS systems seem to have relatively up to date maps of Canada some auto manufacturers systems are not so, Toyota for one.

Having said that they are all reasonably good in major centers.

Get a GPS that you can link to your computer. That way you can download updates, new maps etc.

I use a TomTom and it's pretty good, although it still thinks our house is round the corner! But it does have several English voices, which more than makes up for that!!

I didn't buy mine in the US, but my US-made car nav system has US/Canada/Mexico and Puerto Rico. I imagine GM uses the same nav DVD throughout the range... It does warn in the manual that it's not hot outside major urban centres in Canada, and it lacks features in Canada that it has whilst driving in the US (3d interchange info), but it's fine.

I have a Tom Tom too - invaluable when I first arrived.

Strangely though, it displays my house "round the corner" as well!!

Weird

What navigation system, beside TomTom, is useable or reccommended? Or TomTom is the best?

Most cities are designed on a grid system, so navigation is hardly a necessity, although if you travel to new places a lot its nice to have.

If Im traveling on business for example I try to rent cars through Hertz and request the "never-lost" gps to make life easier.

I don't think it's great at street numbers, but will get you close enough.

Have you downloaded the John Cleese voice, by any chance?

I've only used TomTom in Canada. The salesman said they're all pretty much as good as each other these days.... I chose it because it was the only one with English accent directions!

I'd be more worried about whether or not the car is importable, whether the dealer will sell to someone with a Canadian address, or whether the warrantee will be honored in Canada.

Yes I have - it's on it now and I can't take it quite so seriously anymore. I expect him to pop up from behind Fawlty Towers stylee and bop me on the head!

I think to buy Toyota 4Runner (2003-2005). I think this SUV should not have any problem with importing to Canada. Not so?

You may have difficulty getting a U.S. Toyota dealer willing to sell a vehicle destined for Canada.

They apparently have an agreement with Toyota Canada to not sell to Canadians or anyone else for that matter if the vehicle is to be exported to Canada.

I am also not sure if Toyota Canada will honor the warranty.

Is there any place or officials with whom I can check and get official information before buying this car? May be should be Canadian Custom. I don't thing that Toyota Canada will provide true information.

Not that I've bought a car in the US - but do you have to declare to the dealer you're taking it to Canada?
