Question Nanaimo

No, not the horrifically amazing gorgeous choc bar! I mean the place!

GF and I are looking to take a BC Ferry over from Horeshoe Bay to Nanaimo at the weekend. Has anybody been over there or currently resides there?

Is there anything good to do there for the day? We've already been to Bowen Island and don't really fancy the long trek to Langley.

Any info would be great, the official Nanaimo tourist site is a bit sketchy on pics and info.

The bungy zone just south of Nanaimo there is more than just bungy jumping: http://www.bungyzone.com/ (turn down volume)

I would look at this page:

hi there!

there is a number of people here living and working in Nanaimo. We are south of it..i haven't experienced it as such ..other than a bit of shopping and coming and goings on the ferry..however..i can say from what i have seen of it etc...i think it is a beautiful spot. People seem quite freindly and happy to have a chat....we havent' felt rushed there, if anything quite the opposite...very relaxed.

enjoy~

Hi,

We spent a brilliant day just relaxing at one of the beaches/coves on Gabriola Island (about 20 mins ferry-ride from Nanaimo). It was as if we were the only two people in the world - so peaceful and tons of wildlife.

There's plenty of hiking, biking and kayaking and I think there's also a market on the weekends?

In Nanaimo itself - the harbourfront walkway is nice for a slow mooch with an icecream and the downtown core is quite nice for browsing shops etc.

You can view the visitor's guide online here:

Hi all. We've been to Nanaimo 4 times, and love the place. The city centre is fairly quiet but the marina is a bit more lively. Once you get out of the centre you will find lots of shopping malls. It's a good base for a holiday on the island as it's half way between Victoria and Tofino.

We put in for skilled workers visas 18 months ago, have got frustrated with the wait and are now trying to find jobs in the Nanaimo area. I am a software developer and my partner is a hairdresser, which are both trades that we were told were in demand, but finding a job is virtually impossible when you are over in the UK.

Anyone got any sure fire ways of finding a job other there?

Newcastle Island is really pretty and peaceful. If it's good weather take a picnic and your swim stuff and go all day. We saw quite a bit of wildlife. Plus it's only a $4 boat trip so a cheap date too

You'll find job hunting tips in the BE Wiki article on Careers in Canada.

Some kinds of software developers do not need a positive Labour Market Opinion from Human Resources and Social Development Canada in order to get a temporary work permit.

Use the research tips in the Careers in Canada Wiki article to figure out which companies employ software developers.

Don't just write to them or e-mail them. Pick up the phone and talk to them.

Hope that helps.

We went there this evening on our 'maiden voyage' ....... we've ventured onto the lake but this was the first time in the sea

All was well as we ventured alongside Newcastle Island, then the dirty great BC ferry came around from behind the Island ......... I seldom see my OH move so fast!!
