I can really relate to what you're going through. At first, all our friends and family were so supportive. My in-laws especially. Then, when we took the plunge and I got a job offer, how things changed! Suddenly we were being told all the reasons we should not go! Once the job offer came through and the months of planning suddenly became a reality, even we started thinking 'just what are we doing here'!. Our big concern still is if something were to happen to a family member - like someone fell ill. What would we do then? Just cross our fingers that it doesn't happen 'cos we're here now!
You'll probably find she keeps changing her mind. It's good to think it through. We still keep thinking 'just what are we doing here'!.
Good luck.

Piss off and stop being so nosey!!
No, seriously, my move over here was a total fluke really. I worked for EDS in the UK (Sheffield actually - not far from you I believe!) and asked about relocation. Our PR application was already in progress but the company didn't know. I was told no chance of relocation within the company. Carried on trying regardless and sent out my resume to just about everyone I could find. One person obviously agreed that it was a bit of a strange attitude for a global company not to offer relocation if a business need existed. It wasn't even as if I was wanting relocation expenses - I was very willing to fund the move myself.
Anyway, it just so happened that the EDS office in Edmonton was looking for someone with my skillset and I was thrusting my resume into everyones face!. I'm a project estimator and metrics specialist - a bit of an 'odd' job ( in many ways!). I had done a fair bit of work for EDS in EMEA and EDS Canada decided I was a good fit for the vacancy they had. So wheels were put in motion and I eventually came over as an intra-company transferee. I've been here for three months now - my wife and children join me this weekend, now the sale of our house is just about complete at last. Can't wait - three months away from the kids is a long time.
That's my story. A case of not taking no for an answer, and a whole load of luck!

Did you get the offer before you went then? I am curious how you bagged that one. Would be interested to hear your story esp as you also work in IT.

By the way, I really liked Sheffield. The drive from Sheffield, through Glossop, Snake Pass into Manchester was fantastic. Coming back the other way and getting stuck in the never failing traffic jam was another matter!
But then the drive from Edmonton to Jasper, although just a little longer at 4 hours, seeing the Rockies, a trip to Lake Maligne and the Maligne Canyon ... the deer, eagles, elk and moose - well, what can I say. Awesome!
I know I am very lucky, although I happen to believe I made some of the luck. I'm also taking a bit of a risk so I just hope the luck holds out. I am already seeing the signs of a new wave of company restructuring ... and job cuts. My PR visa still hasn't come through yet. I'm on a 1 year work permit which doesn't allow me to work anywhere else. So if the job goes it could be a very short stay. If that happens, we've spent all our savings, we have no house to return to, all our furniture and stuff was sold, and no job in the UK to go back to. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

flight times
thanks everyone for replies
i did two trips in 28 days in april and may to vancouver
the quickest flight time was 8hr 40 and the longest was 9hr 28
so i think if im coming to canada a couple more hours to the west is no problem.
we have been to van three times now sorry not been to the east coast just seems thats the place for us
