Sorry to complicate this now Jon has got his answer, but is this DVD player multi-region out-of-the-box? Or did you have to hack it?

I just bought a bunch of British DVDs from amazon.co.uk, and am off tonight to buy the Phillips DVP-642, which can be 'hacked' to be region free, and will convert PAL to NTSC

Its out of the box - we asked the sales guy for a multi region unit and he told us that was the only one they did - plus its the cheapest they do too.

I've just checked my instruction manual and it tells me that my TV can read NTSC through the EXT 1 and 2 scart sockets. Does this mean that if I bring my TV over, I can hook it up to a cable or satellite box with a scart lead and get Canadian TV ?

Mind bending stuff

No such thing as scart here, you would need a scart to RCA or SVHS type connector I suspect. Better get that before you come. Cable/ Satelite usually has RCA type outputs, or SVHS for the video signal.

Thanks Iain - is S-VHS the same as a s video connection (small usb type plug), our TV has a connection for one of these as well.

Failing all of that I should maybe just buy a new one

Yep, small round thing. looks a bit like the little mouse or keyboard plugs, about 1/4 inch or less diameter? My mistake with the name.

My original post named the multi region DVD as - HF403 but I was looking at the original receipt. The exchange unit I have now is the DV P5133 and it has the same i/p and o/p spec as the first one I had - sorry for any confusion.

Its really good to know we can get a DVD player that will play our DVDs without a problem.

BUT!

What about VCR's?

Can we get VCR's in Canada that will play our tapes?

Otherwise what will we do about our wedding video???

Thanks,

KJT

If you dont want to bring the TV and VCR and use a transformer you can buy dual format VCRs here, but they are expensive and tend to be form specialist outlets.
An alternative if you have the necessary toys is to burn it to DVD by passing the video output from your VCR through your camcorder (if it has analogue to digital converter like my Sony) and into your PC, and then burn it to DVD in whatever format you want.

If you dont have the toys and dont want to pay for them, then you can pay about $20 for a local videographer to do it for you. I have a buddy who shoots wedding videos as a home business, and he has all sorts of editing equipment to do that. He often does PAL / NTSC conversions, and I'm sure hes not the only guy in canada who would do it!

Good idea to copy it to DVD anyway...you dont want those precious memories to get chewed up by a bawlky VCR!
