Re: Multi-regional DVD players

We bought the cheap $45 Noma DVD player from Best buy, it even says it is multiregion on the side and definitely plays the UK DVDs.

Cheers

What you need is a multi region DCD player that can convert PAL disks to NTSC output, sure some recent newcomers will have some model numbers to hand. Failing that you need a new TV that will handle the PAL input from the DVD player, but that is going to be expensive as there is nit much dual format demand here.

I have converted DVDs on my PC from NTSC to PAL, so its almost certainly possible to do the other way, if an inconvenience.

Many people bring there old PAL format TV / DVD with them and run it off a 110 to 240V transformer so they can watch there old tapes and disks. Transformers are relatively cheap and there are many threads about that here.

CD is not regionalised, so its not an issue.

PC will be no problem, they nearly all have 110/240V power supplies, so its as easy as flicking the switch on the back of the box.

Thanks everyone for your help. We will be buying TV as well as DVD so presumably as long as DVD is multi regional we will be ok, or am i missing the point completely!

Yes you are missing the point.

Make sure either...

A: Your new "multiregional" DVD player can output your PAL format disks in NTSC format
or
B: Your new TV can accept PAL input.

Otherwise you will get B&W result from PAL disks at best.

Hi
generally it is better to buy a PAL/NTSC tv in Canada, these are available in Canada and also much cheaper from the states via the internet.
You will then be able to use any multi region DVD player and it will work.DVD players are low wattage and therefore if it isn't already 110v-240v will only need a small voltage converter (ebay around £15).

A good site to compare prices and order from the states is
www.pricegrabber.com

If you need multi voltage/region/system equipment try
www.220-electronics.com

Saying this,we are bringing over our British TV for the kids as it is NTSC/PAL and will use a 110v-240v video/dvd multi region from richer sounds .

Re: Multi-regional DVD players

Wow this is getting complicated!

Don't worry about getting a dual NTSC/PAL TV (these are expensive) or transformers, just get a DVD player than will play UK DVDs to a NTSC TV. We bought one from a store called Foreign Electronics in Vancouver for a couple of hundred bucks. Then I was round my mate's house (she is english) and we wanted to watch Cold Feet. I looked up her DVD player on the internet (she had one she got free with purchase from The Brick) and I got the codes to let her DVD play UK DVDs for free. It took one minute to put the code in on the remote control so we could watch UK DVDs. Typically it is the cheaper brands from China that allow you to do this.

Don't do what we did and bring your multi region DVD player from the UK to run on a transformer only to find that it converts to PAL but does not convert PAL to NTSC!

I've got a JVC player. Cant see any on-screen setup mode to change it to NTSC, but there is a switch on the back of it which is COMP/RGB or Y/C.

When I switch it to Y/C the picture is Black and White and a bit Fuzzy. Is this the NTSC format ???????

The Nova VC-HF403 costs $49.99 from Best Buy, its multi region (+MP3 & and all that) and is also PAL/NTSC out (selected via menu). But I suggets you take out 4 year cover as - you only get a 90 warrantee.

It only cost $20 and we just had it replaced yesterday - bought 9 June 05 - they gave us a new one, guess its not worth repairing them. I think it was 'static shocks' that knocked it out and we sure are going to get more of them before winter is over. So to me it was worth it for peace of mind, plus if it goes again in 2/3 years (and I think it may) I will get a new one then too.

Ok, let me get this straight: this $49.99 DVD player will play Region 2 DVDs, PAL format, from the UK, but outputs it in NTSC format so, for example, my JVC tv which i bought from Leons 4 years ago (and is just an NTSC TV) will show these DVDs problem-free.

If I am mistaken, you may slap me with a wet fish.

You are correct, it outputs NTSC, PAL, PAL60 (whatever that is) and has an auto setting too - don't know why it has the others aswell, I leave it on auto and it plays anything you put in it - so you dont have to do anything but put the DVD in and press play.

Re: Multi-regional DVD players

This is great.
I was asking this question elsewhere recently.
And to find out that I can bring some other electrical bits and bobs and us a transformer is fantastic.
I thought it would be detrimental to the equipment and shorten its life.

Here is the info I got on dvd player:
But it looks as all that has been covered here anyway. :)

Europe is Region 2.
The US and Canada are Region 1.Usually, DVD players are 'fixed' to a particular region. Furthermore, they can usually be changed to another region a prefixed number of times, at which time they become immutable. However, most DVD players can be made 'region-free' (i.e. they will play any region DVD, aka Region 0) by entering a code of some sort, typically through the remote.

However, if you're considering purchasing a new one, it might be worth hunting for the codes in advance just in case you manage to pick one that can't be made region free. (However, I doubt there are many that can't be unlocked, since this would damage sales.)
