Just call it the Drive - we are here at the moment - 1st & Commercial - Sky train and bus are fab from here

Don't worry. In my few days there I did not really come across any undesirable area. Vancouver seem to be a really nice place so I am sure you and your OH will find a place to suit both of you. I was given a good website to check out in my other thread entitled 'Rentals in Vancouver'. You might want to have a look, lots of rental properties on that.

Can anyone tell me if there is something like a monthly buspass or transport pass like the Oster card in London? If there is, how do I go about getting one? I may be starting work very soon after touching down in BC so would prefer to sort one out ASAP when I get there.

From the sky train stations or local newsagents - they dont have an oyster card system yet - but you can buy books of tickets - works out cheaper than daily purchase. approxc 12 tix for price of 10 . .in book .

One zone - which you should be if yr downtown already is $2.50 one way and lasts for 90 mins once validated - so can use for bus and sky tain.

Great! That is my transport sorted. Thanks.

I must say that considering Vancouver downtown isn't that big, $2.50 for a one way bus ride is actually not cheap.

Yes - but its lasts 90 mins - so you can go all round for 2.50 . . . I got on at Commercial yesterday went all the way Downtown, did what I needed to do and then came back - all on same ticket !

You cant go over on the seabus on a 1 zone and cant go up to Metrotown - they need 2 zone tix . .

You might find Strathcona interesting. Its much like the drive was around 10 years ago. Older neighbourhood recently renov'd and inflated in price. Very close to the 'bad' side of vancouver- the down town east side. Not too many people know about it. It's got a very genuine lived in feel to it

Thanks. I like the farecard's weekend multiple travellers bit. Maybe I might not even bother getting a car! Just live near a supermarket and hire a car when I need to get out of town.

You can get an Annual Employer Pass for around 10% cheaper than the
monthly farecard from Providence Health Care. Bi weekly deductions will be made from your paystub.I bought a 1 zone pass and $31.75 is deducted
every 2 weeks from my pay stub.

During the hospital orientation, you go to HR and get the transit enrolment
form.At the end of the year, you are allowed to claim for tax deduction.

when it costs a quid just to get onto a London bus and £1.20 to travel to the next oxo station.... Vancouver prices are like sale of the century.

I love the 90 minute ticket validation too..... i can foresee myself sprinting from bus to bus, just to rack up the 'moneys worth'

I was in manchester about 2 years ago and had no idea how much buses cost anymore. I remembered it used to be about 5 pence as a kid. I got on the bus with a quid ready thinking ti was plenty to get down town - nope it was like closer to 2 quid!!

A very good point to remember. If you keep your monthly or annual transit passes you get 20% back when you file your tax return.
