Moving to Vancouver........

well accessibility is something we are banking on. we are heading out on a recce in a few weeks and will be renting for a week in the Commercial Drive area (or do i just say 'commercial'?)
with my OH 'um-ing and ah-ing' over whether to rent a car or not, we might be public transport reliant. which is no bad thing i guess?

Price, location and size..... how can i put it tactfully in case she ever reads these pages.....
with regard to what, where and how many rooms, my perspective is a little closer to reality than that of my OH's
being a plan so long in the running, i guess any form of compromise in our migratory ambitions (ie anything short of a mansion type set up in a beautiful setting) will be deemed a failure by 'er indoors!
for eg. i could handle a downtown condo highrise shoe box.... but for her it would be too small. the places she likes the look of, has an eye watering price tag. it is the 'cake and eat it' syndrome.
but i (try to) remain optimisitc
if nothing else, i am simply looking forward to 'getting a feel' for the place once we're on the ground out there. i think the plan is to set up in 'the drive' and fan out westwards......

Can anyone tell me if there is something like a monthly buspass or transport pass like the Oster card in London? If there is, how do I go about getting one? I may be starting work very soon after touching down in BC so would prefer to sort one out ASAP when I get there.

One zone - which you should be if yr downtown already is $2.50 one way and lasts for 90 mins once validated - so can use for bus and sky tain.

From the sky train stations or local newsagents - they dont have an oyster card system yet - but you can buy books of tickets - works out cheaper than daily purchase. approxc 12 tix for price of 10 . .in book .

I must say that considering Vancouver downtown isn't that big, $2.50 for a one way bus ride is actually not cheap.

You cant go over on the seabus on a 1 zone and cant go up to Metrotown - they need 2 zone tix . .

monthly farecard from Providence Health Care. Bi weekly deductions will be made from your paystub.I bought a 1 zone pass and $31.75 is deducted
every 2 weeks from my pay stub.
During the hospital orientation, you go to HR and get the transit enrolment
form.At the end of the year, you are allowed to claim for tax deduction.

when it costs a quid just to get onto a London bus and £1.20 to travel to the next oxo station.... Vancouver prices are like sale of the century.
I love the 90 minute ticket validation too..... i can foresee myself sprinting from bus to bus, just to rack up the 'moneys worth'
