Hi all, my hubby has been offered a position in Toronto for the next 3-5 years.
We are looking at renting initially. We have 2 boys under 5 so are looking for a nice family neighbourhood not too far from Toronto. Near to nice schools with lots of things to do nearby. Maybe nearer to the lake. I don't even now where to start looking. Any ideas???
There doesn't seem to be many houses for rent or am I just looking in the wrong places??
All suggestions very gratefully received.

Hi Kjmum,
Not sure if your aware of the cost of renting downtown,T.O.
very high in the nicer areas, High Park/Beaches area's for example. Lots of loft apts. and condo's for sale at a price tho! Depending on how your husband plans to get to work, I would suggest somewhere near a Go Train Station, in the burbs, is your best bet. Driving not recommended, downtown or Hwy's at rushhours. Depending again on where he will be working, in the East or West end of the GTA, I could suggest , Ajax, Mississauga or Brampton. A long way from the lake I'm afraid but more resonable rentals. If money no object, try Port Credit/Oakville areas. Hope this helps, anything else just post a note.
Good Luck

look at www.viewit.ca
They have hundreds of rentals in Toronto.
Personally I'd either look at the downtown core or beach but then again, I'm 21 and have no kids to look after

I lived in the beach for fifteen years or so up until February this year. I'd say it's most definitely a good neighbourhood for someone with two small children and a dog (assuming work is downtown), whether or not it's affordable is another thing though.

Thank you all for your comments, they are a big help.
'Caja', thanks for your comments about the cost of rental. I didn't know that. His company are giving us a really generous rental allowance as part of his package which is why we are keen to rent to begin with. At least until we find the area we like.
I think we would prefer to live in the suburbs. At the moment in the UK we live in the centre of London so less city based would be great. Not sure where his office is going to be, they are moving from Ottawa, but think it would be downtown Toronto. So maybe no more than 45mins/1 hour commute for him otherwise we will never see him
Hubby was told missasauga area was ok by the person he will be replacing so thanks again 'Caja' will look more into that.
As we are hoping people will come and visit, a house would be better than an apartment. There seems to be masses of apartments around though. Thanks 'andit' for the link, just off to look at it now to see if there is anything.

Good luck to you and the family relocating to Toronto. As mentioned earlier there are a number of rental options, especially in the suburbs each with their own add on's. The wife and I rent a townhouse in North York region of Vaughan. It is one of the fastest growing areas to boom in terms of housing and found it to be very nice. Downtown core is roughly 35 - 45 mins away. Those in need of public transport will not have any problems moving around either with TTC and YRT, the main transit systems offering flexible timetables.
I am about to emigrate shortly after getting visa clearence, but must have travelled to Ontario about 16 times in four years, so my experience has racked up the ladder quite considerably.
I would be pleased to answer any questions posters have, that's if I know the answer. Good luck to all those making the bold move.
