moving to canada
#16
Hi everyone new to this site, my wife and I and eldest son are considering a move to canada
We are both in our 40's son 19.
It's not necessarily for financial gain rather a better way of life.
I am ex military and working in civvy street in uk as an hgv class 1 truck driver wife is a qualified pharmacy technician.
We are just at the thinking about it stage,
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
We were thinking of somewhere rural, and don't mind a fixer upper lol
Somewhere warm please?
Like I say, any help or advice would be great, many thanks

Cant give much advice about visa's and that as I've going through the easy route of gaining employment through a company, but you being an ex para you will all always get my help mate.
Good luck to you and you family and try not to read to much into the positive and negative about doing the off from the UK in the first place.
All the best

Thanks everyone for advice every time I ask the question about moving to canada, oz or any other destination there seems to be a massive amount of negativity which is ok, I understand that, I'd much rather have the truth than rose tinted specs.
But doesn't it make you wonder how anyone ever did it?
And yes Neil any info u could give me on truck driving would be great. I currently work perm nights, 30 grand a year just local, and whatever else they throw at me lol, I've heard some horror stories about driving in Canada money poor drivers being abused by companies etc etc
I guess it's like a lot of drivers over here who disrespect polish drivers?
Cheers
Mac

From: A Briton, married to a Canadian, now in Fredericton.

Some years back, I thought of moving to Australia, mainly for the sex, as I was going out with a denizen from Sydney...however, at No point did I get the two countries muddled up or think they were ever interchangeable. There are a few miles between the two countries, both geographically and culturally...I would like to think!
There is a great wealth of information on here...especially for truckers, it would seem, and I wish you every success with your plans.

We aren't in OZ, we are in Canada, and, personally speaking, I "like" Canadians...I married one, and grew another. I am not negative about Canada, nor are many of my fellow posters...but I am not about to go and have a beer by the Barbie...it's Canada, it's cold.

You'd get a job offer, and a LMO (info in the Wiki if you don't know what that is), then move over on a Temp Work Permit. Depending on how in demand your skills are, it can be as quick as a few months.
You can find info in the Wiki about job hunting, just don't pay anybody to find you a job as that's illegal in Canada and there are a lot of dodgy companies out there that will take your money for non-existent jobs.
HTH.

Got my CV (resume) made up to the Canadian version then just practically carpet bombed all the construction companies in Canada hoping one of them to bite.
I work as a site manager in the UK and have applied for the position of Construction Superintendent, so I checked out the companies on the web first to make sure the did the type of work I do back home.
Once filtered down to the right companies I let loose with my CV , I also checked if the companies had positions available.
I aint saying this will work for everyone but in my line of work I stood a good chance of someone giving me a shout.
Mac, I'm lucky mate that I got as far as I did, as the company who interviewed are now flying me and the missus out to meet them and finalise the contract with them.
Bear in mind I contacted about 50 companies and only 2 got back to me with good replies, this all happened in a space of 3 months. I also targeted the bigger companies who already had a LMO already in place.
(LMO is the required immigration paper work needed by companies for hiring foreign workers)
Am I a chancer ? yes , but who dares wins
You never know until you give it a try , cant wait to leave East London behind but not my Mum and Dad , pie and mash and Upton Park.
We was looking to go to Vancouver at first, but the work available was in Regina so in the end so as a rule of thumb you go where the work is.
Just go for it mate as you never know.
Any thing else let me know mate, be glad to help.
