Hi all,
Me and my husband have been thinking of moving to Canada for a while now, we have decided to just go for it (life is to short) he is a mechanic, just over 15 years experience, he worked for a Nissan dealership for 13 years and passed to Master tech level, he has the ATA qualification also and is currently working as a diagnostic tech for a garage, we have 3 young children so we wanted to make the move while they are still young.
I am currently looking at areas saskatchewan seems to have alot of jobs for auto mechanics, we are going the job route i think so we will have to go with the areas where the jobs are.
I wanted to introduce myself and ask if anyone has any tips/advice etc then it would be great
Thanks

If looking at Saskatchewan then consider looking at the SINP programme.
Auto mechanic is a skill level B job which also gets you a spousal open work permit.
Obviously OH finding a job and getting an LMO is the hardest part or getting nominated under the SINP.

Welcome to BE
Check out some of Piff Poffs posts, her other half works as a mechanic at a main line dealership if I remember right... its not always a bed of roses.

A lot less protection for employee's here....they don't like your face or don't 'fit in'.... you're out at the drop of a hat. No warning. Period. I have personally been on the receiving end after voicing an opinion to workloads.

I haven't been to Saskatchewan before, I have been to Vancouver and loved it but house prices are so expensive, the other area I was looking at is nova Scotia, at the moment it's just lots and lots of research, it isn't something we are rushing into, good to get advice, experiences and tips on here

I went to Vancouver years ago, so not expecting it to be the same now i know there has been a big boom there hence house prices going up so much, we want something quite quiet, a good place to bring up kids, but has work to offer at the same time.

I can give you the name and number of about 5 places that would take you on in the morning.!!! There is a major shortage here in SK for skilled trades people. Anyone with a trade has generally sought to work on the oil and gas rigs, meaning that the general specialised areas are not getting to fill their jobs. The oil and gas business pays more, but you're life with your family is compromised. Also, in my humble opinion, you pay out for new washing machines all the time defeating the purpose of working there! lol.. We moved here with 4 kids under 6, and it is not as easy as it seems, but well worth the journey!
Life in Saskatchewan is somewhat different that you might think from what you see on the internet - I know it was different for us anyway! For example, the weather is a major contender, and if you are prepared to deal with whatever mother nature dishes out, then ul be just fine. Our highways were closed for 2 days all around us, so no travel in or out for anyone. The cost of living is expensive in certain parts of Saskatchewan, and where we are appears to be very expensive. The quality of life however, is far superior to back home. I'm waiting for the sun to melt the 4 foot of snow in my back yard to sit out on my sun lounger with a cold beer!!! If you want you can pm me and I'll try and help you would with as much info as I can, as its a daunting task moving with kids!! If you decide to make the move, Saskatchewan is booming and there are a lot of jobs here for you :-)
